I enjoy travelling in the off season since the crowds are gone usually, it's also not so hot or so cold. Traffic is easier, only problem is the area may not be fully open as in OBX prior to Memorial day. Places were open but not as many as would be in a few more weeks, but i think I could deal with that there, I couldn't imagine the traffic to get to our resort in Duck.

It's funny because we've been to Scottsdale in January to escape the cold of the midwest. while it's not really pool weather, I can still be found in shorts and and t-shirt. I absolutely LOVED Scottsdale in January and we hope to return sometime in the future.
Feb/Mar is even better. We've only been here 18 months and we ain't goin back.

The trick question using the word "prefer"

Well I guess I would prefer that kids were in school year round so as a childless twosome we could travel whenever we wanted without crowds. I would really love to be able to get out of our Texas summer heat and spend a week in a timeshare some where cooler in summer but we stay home during those months so as to not be traveling when everyone else is.

We prefer to travel in the slow season at the resorts, better choice of units, more peace and quiet, no crowds on the beaches, hiking trails, etc. So our choice travel seasons are spring and fall. But also more than willing to go mid winter even in bad weather areas. Sightseeing in Europe November-March works out well for us. No long lines at museums, no crowds on the trains, etc.

Seems like the answer to this question is based on whether or not you have school age kids (or grandkids) and if you need to plan your trips during school holiday and summer break.

Given a choice without restrictions, I'd choose May and Sept.

For now, we deal with the school calendar, with full weeks in March/November and of course summer. I was just telling my other half last night that we need to stop chosing "warm" vacations in the summer. Hawaii is great year round. It could open up a lot more opportunites...of course so will getting out from under the school calendar. I so envy those of you who travel shoulder season.

Funny story...our school district was contemplating giving us a week long reprieve in October. I was estatic. Everyone I spoke to was against it. They asked me why I wanted that week off-I screamed "IT'S SHOULDER SEASON!" to which I received blank stares...

Any time of the year, but prefer Spring, Summer, or Fall.

At this point in our lives, we're trying to take full advantage of the fact we're both still in relatively good health and that the kids are grown and we can go when we want. Not being tied to the school calendar is seen as a blessing in my eyes. Of course, the trade off is the kids now have more adult size problems when there's a problem.

Remember, the question is when do you prefer to vacation and not when you have to vacation. I realize many of us are stuck with a schedule not of our own choosing. We've been there and done that and it can be a tricky situation when everyone else wants to travel at the same time. Now we try to avoid those high demand times as much as possible to allow those with kids the opportunity to take vacation when we can stay at home and be available for work. I try to choose a week other than spring break week and I don't believe we've ever been gone over the winter break period either.

I will admit I'm surprise at the number of people who prefer shoulder season. I thought maybe we were odd ducks with our desire to travel just before or after the major vacation times. It saved us thousands of dollars when we were able to buy Silver season at Marriott's Ocean Pointe rather than needing Platinum or Gold season and, there's a LOT less compition for the weeks we want, making it easy to make reservations.

We still take at least one summer week but, it's the least favorite time for us to travel. We'll attempt to either head up to the mountains or drive over to Branson and just hang out. We prefer the mountains because they're cooler and, we may start making routine summer trips into Colorado if our Breckenridge vacation works out well for us this year.

Shoulder season offers a lot of the advantages of summer season - most things are open, you're not going to get snowed in, it's warm enough to hang around outside even if it's cool for that year - without the main disadvantages (crowds & horrific heat). I knida like dead-of-winter vacations to places that aren't ski resorts but aren't particularly warm, either (Pennsylvania, Tennessee), but every time I've taken one there's something I would have liked to check out that was closed while we were there.

There's something surreal about going to a major vacation destination like Wisconsin Dells Labor Day week - Sunday and Monday are mobbed, and then Tuesday Wisconsin Dells feels like a ghost town. No lines, anywhere, you just walk into places where the line stretched way out into the parking lot the day before. And while there may not be quite the variety of choices - all the outside water parks have closed - there is still the option of trying that type of entertainment - the indoor water parks are still open. The weather is still just as good, but the social environment has totally changed.

I'm always surprised when people who have the option of going shoulder season still choose to go in the summer.

Generally we prefer the Spring. We are free to go at anytime and have no reason to escape where we live. We definitely try to avoid the times when school is out such as summer and spring break. A lot depends on where we are going. The common denominator is it has to be warm where we are going.
