New policy listed on RCI site

I was looking at the different Silverleaf resorts when checking availability on the RCI Weeks site today. It does indeed specify that effective July 1 NO PETS are allowed.

That's the end of booking Silverleaf for us since the only reason we chose these resorts for RCI exchanges is so we could travel with our dog.

RV resort developers are going to love this! Pet owners make up a big percentage of their owner base- and with a few of those developers working on cabin and chateau products at their resorts- the timing couldn't be better for them.. This policy change is going to be very difficult for many Silverleaf owners to accept, however.

We've really been considering getting another dog lately and Silverleaf came up in those discussions as a possible rental possibility if we got a small breed. It's been years since our Ridgeback passed on and she brought such joy to our family... I've been saying no for years simply because finding quality care for an animal while you travel can be so difficult, and we now travel more frequently.

I just spoke with Britt Hulsey at the Silverleaf Apple Mountain Resort in Georgia. He confirmed that the policy has taken effect BUT that since I had my RCI exchange reservation before the July 1, 2009 policy, Apple Mountain will honor and allow pets for my reservation.

He talked like for RCI exchangers with confirmed reservations before 7/1/09 they will be allowed pets. This effects both owners and exchangers.

Call and see if your exchange reservation will be treated the same. Good luck!

Both owners and exchangers??? Out of the blue? Could they be getting ready for a takeover??? Not wanting to start a rumor... just wondering? How strong is Silverleaf, financially?

I hope it wasn't inconsiderate owners that ruined it for everyone. It seems people did clean up after their pets OR the landscape crews were so awesome that they took care of it (which they shouldn't have to!!)

Oh well. Guess Fluffums won't get vacations for a while ...

We have considered it periodically. Loved Ozark Mountain near Branson. Fox River is only a few hours away, far enuf to prevent using it as a country club. Went to OaknSpruce, wanted to go to St Louis and have family in Texas...

One of our SL/Yahoo Group members posted over on Yahoo that she called Member Services and they told her it was just for RCI exchanges because many were complaining about the $55 fee. So they decided to exclude RCI exchanges with pets. Doesn't make sense but you never know with Silverleaf what they are going to do from one day to the next.

It is a contentious issue. My own resort still permits owners to take their dogs, but has banned exchangers/renters from doing the same.

Mike, I am glad to hear this, thanks for posting (and I'm glad to hear your trip won't be spoiled). I will wait a day or two and call O n S again, since they had no idea what I was talking about yesterday.

$55 fee was never a problem for me! Anyone complaining about that can explain to me where they board their dogs for less.

It didn't make sense to me. Owners pay the $55 also. When we bought our week back in 2000 pets were not allowed and it is in my contract NO PETS ALLOWED.

Ahhhhh... this sheds a different light on the situation... I wonder how many contracts are written this way...

Yeah, I didn't know OWNERS also paid it! Full price, at that!

Interesting there were no dogs allowed in 2000.

Ok, I spoke with someone at Oak n Spruce - she had no idea what I was talking about but after checking with Someone, she said we would be allowed to bring pets, but that the resort was moving to be "pet free" for all new reservations.

We have entertained several guests staying at OMR with dogs. They bring em to the Margaritaville Dock and they have fun jumping off the swim deck, swimming, etc.

Most of em are city dogs and wear themselves out.

It is/was a feature of Silverleaf, and a selling point, but not one to those who don't vacation with pets, which would be the majority.
