I didn't know that Silverleaf was pet friendly. Even though they have changed their policy, I'll make sure I cross them off of my list. My family is extremely allergic to dog and cat dander and it stays around for a long while after the animals are gone.

We can't stay at the Four Season's anymore because they used to allow pets. I was suffering my last two trips to the resort in Scotsdale and Aviara.

If a resort had as a selling point that it is pet friendly, I do think it's wrong to change it later. However, I think the opposite is true as well. If a resort is billed as no pets allowed, then it shouldn't make exceptions and change the policy later.

I was sorta beating around the bush, trying to be diplomatic.

But, being pet-friendly is not a selling point IMHO. Most people would prefer to not stay where pets stay, and it would detract from the value and appeal of a property.

Again, IMHO, most people do not seek out accomodations where dogs and cats stay.

It's somewhat similar to smoking bans . . . you displease the few to please the many.

I think they changed it a year or so later after we bought. It didn't matter either way for us since we don't have any pets. Our dog died at age 17, while we were on vacation in Flroida and we never got another one.

It would be a selling point for us as we like to road trip with our dog. Many people take kids, we take the dog. Looking around at a Silverleaf, plenty of others with no kids, just dogs.

There are many websites devoted to finding pet-friendly accomodations so there is a significant demand. We will never know what "most" prefer.

Your last statement applies to much more than pets and smoking!!!

I feel sorry for the people who bought at these resorts because they were dog friendly. It's bad timing right now for them to sell the timeshare condo but they no longer can take their pet either. How can they change the contract like that, if it was stated in the contract when they bought?

Putting a dog or cat in the kennel or have a pet sitter come to the house is often a big worry. It was for us and certainly when the pet gets older.

I am not trying to add to the controversy but.....

When I was just up at Oak N Spruce, I visited Vacation Villages in the Berkshires - a very nice resort deserving of its silver crown status.
I was reading the information they gave me and it stated they are a pet friendly resort but that u must notify them prior to your visit.
This is because they ONLY allow pets in building # 1 (out of a current 14 old and 4 new buildings) - they have a 'potty area' only outside of building #1 and you can walk your dog only on the trail that is near that building.

That seems like a fair policy to me and would prevent the problem for people with allergies, pet hair/dander and fear of dogs - by containing the pets to certain building(s) only.

It would be nice if all big resorts, with multiple buildings, had separate buildings for both type of owners. Just dreaming but what about cats? Why are they never allowed anywhere? Cats, that live indoors, do not do more damage than dogs or people wouldn't keep them inside. JMHO.

I love my cat but she sure sheds a LOT - I wouldn't want to subject others to that as well as the allergy sufferers out there.

People with allergies would never stay in these units.

We would have never taken our cat because he preferred staying at home but it was a worry. If you want to travel with a cat, you will have to start it early. No more animals for us because it did bother us leaving him home alone and we had a great pet sitter but our cat felt so lonely and didn't eat well when we were gone. He ate the same food. I still miss him but traveling is a lot easier now.

I think a happy medium could be found as the resort can make a few units pet friendly and available as such.

I have pets but don't take them on the road because I have reliable help with taking care of them but when I did take my dog on the road with me in the past it was very hard to find pet friendly places except of course in the Ritz Carltons or expensive hotels where Fifi is always welcome or the cheap Mom & Pop motels in Fort Myers beach.

I recently stayed at a resort where some rooms were in the pet section and I thought that very smart of the resort and it's a brand new beautiful resort by the way. (vacation villages in the Berkshires)

America loves their pets and there is a huge market for pet owners in my opinion. At least I see it in my rental apartments. I always use "pets allowed" in my advertising and it helps me get top dollar rents and loyal tenants. I just put tile in my units instead of carpeting or wood floors and cleaning between tenants is a snap. The same could be done in the timeshare industry. (couldn't find a cat in the smileys).

Separate space for pets makes sense, special walking area is fine, but, I have a border collie so our walks can be quite lengthy, a couple miles easily. If the walking area is sufficiently large that'd be great. Maybe it actually doesn't much matter, since we go explore the area and she comes with us (we NEVER leave her in the unit alone but always take a crate). If on-site walkies are short, we'll go find a nice big park.

Agree that people with allergies would not last a minute in a "petted" unit. This is partially why we don't sneak her in anywhere. And because I generally follow rules.

I just stayed at Silverleaf last week. 8 month ago I received a note from RCI that pets were no longer allowed at Hill Country resort. I called the resort the week before I left and they said yes pets are still allowed. We are someday going to make it pet unfriendly but it actually hasn't happened yet. It is also not across the board, but only resort specific.

Hill Country was the only location that changed its policy, notified RCI, but have yet to enforce it.

Then I guess they could do the same for smokers, huh?!
