  • No more pets at Silverleaf

I am posting this here for informational purposes, not to start the old debate about pets in timeshares...

This is bad news for my upcoming August week

    Dear RCI Member:

We are writing to you concerning your upcoming vacation to a Silverleaf’s property.

Recently, the staff at the Silverleaf’s Resorts notified us that effective immediately, the resort no longer accepts pets at any of their properties.

We realize this may have an impact on your vacation and wanted to inform you of this situation in advance. Since space availability is limited in the area you confirmed, we encourage you to retain your confirmation. However, if you prefer, you may cancel your vacation and submit a request for alternate accommodations. No additional fee will be required.

If you wish to pursue this option, please contact your Member Services at (800) 338-7777. As always, Vacation Guides are available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST. If you do not wish to change your plans, no response to this letter is necessary.

We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to providing you with quality vacations in the years to come.

I'd call the resort. There were almost more dogs than people at OnS last week.

They are still accepting them as of today (at least the person I spoke with is taking them), but that only means the policy hasn't filtered down yet. Hopefully they will allow it for existing reservations. I gave my unused days that week to someone planning on taking dogs - I guess I'll be dogsitting if it doesn't work, and my dog does not play well with others, at least not on her own turf...

Supposedly allowing pets was one of Silverleaf's big selling points. Fingers crossed they will grandfather existing reservations/exchanges.

Yep. And I really feel for all the owners who bought because of the pet-friendly policy.

We're booked at Seaside in Galveston for a week in October and planned to bring our dog along. I haven't received the letter yet from RCI. Guess I'll give the resort a call and see what they have to say.

Crap. We were making the rounds of the Silverleaf's because they accepted dogs. No chance of buying into that network now.

I thought of you, BG. I thought you already owned there, glad to hear you hadn't taken the plunge yet. Maybe if enough owners speak out, they will reconsider.

OR, what if this is a policy that only applies to RCI exchangers, like the 1 in 4 or the "hospitality fee" at the Manhattan Club.....

eta: RCI hasn't messed with my online confirmation yet, so I have printed it out - it includes language regarding the $55 non-refundable pet fee....

After looking for info on this on the Silverleaf website (nothing there), I called Silverleaf's customer service number and told them how disappointed I was by this sweeping change in policy. The operator had not heard anything about it, so I read her Glitter's note from RCI. The operator said she would look into it and call me back.

If anyone else would like to call, here is the number.

                    Silverleaf Resorts, Inc. Corporate Offices
                    Telephone: 214-631-1166
                    (Open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CST)

Of course if you are a Silverleaf owner, your voice would count for more.

I wonder if there's been an incident (bite or attack) and they need to change policy for insurance reasons. The transition will be tough. We've missed bringing our little dog on vacation but we've never stayed at a Silverleaf.

                        There sure were.

I imagine many people bought into the system because of that.
I wonder if the restriction is for exchangers only?

I hope this is just Oak & Spruce. I have a week at Apple Mountain Resort at the end of the month. I guess I'll be calling tomorrow to see what the deal is.

We did that a couple of years ago - went to 3 Silverleaf's in Texas - Conroe, Galveston, and the one north of San Antonio in the hill country. We chose them specifically because of the pets allowed policy. All were great, and we loved being able to take our cocker spaniel with us for a 3-1/2 week road trip. Baxter loved it too!
