  • New Vacation week. Suggestions please.

I have traveled the same summer week for 11 years as of this year. Due to sports schedules I will for the first time since kids, switch my vacation week starting in 2010.

The new vacation week will be 4th of July week and maybe the week after. I usually spend the 4th on the lake in wth inlaws so will I be very happy to go away for this week.

Does anybody have any experiences that were really great for this week. I do not like the beach all that much so mountains are much more appealing to me.

I am seeing some really great space in places like Steamboat Springs and Inland Maine that seem like the type of vacation I would really like. Of course I would jump on Smuggs if it were avail. Have been to Massanutten and would go back but I have seen last call for almost every week of the year in atleast one resort so would not waste an exchange (unless a 4 bed summit unit).

Where have you been for the 4th that was a much better vacation than you expected? Oh yeah 3 Kid ages 7-12

Are you looking to stay in a particular part of the county or continent? Driving or flying?

Just about anywhere in the US. I am very easy to please but would like a great 4th of July experience for the Kids. I love the mountains. Not crazy about the beach. I have not been to CO or anywhere in Maine before and I am tempted. Nice July temps would be a big plus.

New Hampshire's White Mountains. Plenty of attractions and great scenery. With II, try for InnSeasons Pollard Brook, RCI's best bet may be the Grand Summit at Attitash. One of the few places where the week of the 4th is one of the easier summer weeks to get. Don't miss Clark's Trading Post if you go.

I went to St. Augustine 2 years ago and Stayed at the Bluegreen in World Golf village. They put on a spectacular fireworks show and they also did a huge barbecue for the guests for free. People came from Georgia just to see the fireworks show. Plus they have a beautiful zero entry pool and a nice hot tub and of course golf course. It was hot but with the pool it was great. I'd go back but of course it's not exactly near any mountains except for Mt. Trashmore.

One of the best 4th of July week timeshare vacations we had was at a timeshare right on the lake shore at South Lake Tahoe, CA. We had an awesome view of the spectacular fireworks show right from our own very large deck. It is a very pretty area.

What about trying Yellowstone? You can stay at Island Park an visit the park. See Cody, WY and Jackson Hole and the Tetons. River Rafting trip in the area. Horseback riding. There is a lot to do there and it was one of our favorite vacations. We love the mountains too.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I would love to do Yellowstone or Tahoe. DW and kids are pushing for HOT and Beach being the great husband and father I claim to be, I will probably give in and book it for them.

This global warming that we are experiencing and my trip coming up this next week to Ocean Shores and Glacier National park will warrent a nice hot week on the beach and will probably be a welcome vacation.

Than I will plan for the mountains again in 2011. Colorado and park city are still high on the list also.

Our family has spent the 4th of July at Lake Tahoe and at Big Bear. You can swim in the lakes at both places. The 4th festivities were fantastic in both locations and your kids would enjoy either one.

                        Wilderness Club at Big Cedar

Check out the Wilderness Club at Big Cedar (WCBC). It is in southern Missouri (ridgedale) in the Ozark mountains and sits on Table Rock Lake. You can boat, hike, swim, ride horses, fish, laze around, etc. They have great fireworks on major holidays (new years, memorial day, 4th of July, and Labor Day). We go there 4-5 times a year with kids aged 5-10 and we all love it.

We just finished a family reunion there with 35 of my nearest and dearest and every single member of the reunion loved it and wants to return, even the brother and sister in law who drove up from Ft. Lauderdale!

Ridgedale is about 15 minutes south of Branson Missouri which is a totally different sort of destination that WCBC. Some love it, but for me, I'm happy with the luxurious outdoorsy-ness of WCBC.

It is a very hard trade to get (I think) but there are lots of Bluegreen owners who rent points. I'm the only BG owner of the bunch in my reunion group and the rest of my family rented from an owner I know with lots of points.

                        Good luck,

                        Anita

                          How about northern Minnesota

We spent a week at White Birch at Breezy Point on Pelican Lake beginning July 3 this year. Nice 2 BR less than a mile from the lake, but units at Breezy Point are on the lake. All part of same resort so access to a couple of golf courses, marina, tennis, beach. Our son and his wife and their son stayed in unit with us. Beautiful weather (80s for highs, upper 50s for lows and sunny all week; great in this cool summer). One day took the bikes to Itasca State Park, the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and waded across the Mississippi. Other TS complexes in area to consider.

I don't consider swimming in Lake Tahoe to be an option unless you are a polar bear, The water is very cold.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. After the recent trip we are going HOT HOT HOT for next trip. Just spent 9 Days on NW Pacific coast and weather was very cool and the water was FREEZING. Even during the BIG HEAT WAVE. We still loved the vacation. I have to admit that the 40 Degree day in Yellowstone was a real experience during the dog days of summer.
