  • I just received my timeshare property tax bill!!

I received my Gaslamp Plaza Suites timeshare property tax bill from San Diego County today. In California, the property tax on timeshares is billed directly from the county. Boy what a pleasant surprise. The tax dropped by 65% from last year due to reassessment of the value. My property tax on our home has also dropped a lot.

Has anybody else, especially California timeshare owners, experienced this?

Yes, mine dropped, too. I own in Riverside County, at Desert Breezes. My taxes dropped 14%. My tax bill at SLB at Avila Bay hasn't come yet. My house taxes dropped slightly last year after the assessor re-assessed everyone. I hope it doesn't continue to drop. I'd prefer our property value to stablize after the huge drop last year.

I haven't gotten my timeshare tax bill yet, but I filed a grievance due to depreciation of my home and got a $400/yr tax decrease.

It appears that $55 is pretty high for a studio based on the economic situation today. What county is it in? That can make a big difference.

I think it was $53 last year, so a $2 increase.

It is a mini suite upper floor that sleeps 4. The Gaslamp Plaza Suites is an urban property in the Gaslamp area in downtown San Diego. The property tax dropped to $27 from $75 last year.

Question, Is this part of San Diego near any home or commercial foreclosures.

There is talk that foreclosures in a community will cause property values to decrease.

No, there are no foreclosures anywhere near there. Downtown San Diego, especially the Gaslamp area, is a great area. We go there all the time and spend 2 or 3 nights at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites on bonus time and play tourist. We live just an hour from there. The resort is a very strong trader. The assessed value is now realistic as it is close to what the resale value has been.

We only own one timeshare in Orange County. Last year, I paid $53.82 for the yearly taxes and this year I have to pay exactly the same amount. It is a 1 BR unit at Laguna Surf.

However, the net assessed value was reduced from $9,156 to $5,202. Wouldn't that reduce our taxes or is this for the year after?

I am not complaining after what Maui, HI is doing to us. Did anyone read the Starwood thread as everyone there is up in arms about it. Maui is taking advantage of the timeshare owners because we cannot vote. It is outrageous!

That is quite a big drop... good for you!

If this catches on nationwide, a lot of local governments could be in a world of hurt. The two local counties in our area have already had to cut back drastically because of low sales tax revenues. Property tax decreases would affect the schools.

In California, you have the right to challenge your assessed value. In times like we have today, often it is done automatically-but it doesn't hurt to ask. I filed to have my personal residence reduced and it was granted...no problem.

Timeshares are real estate-so I believe the same principles apply.

Often you can do this online, as I did. Just locate the county assessors office online and have a look. A few minutes typing could benefit you.
