  • Latest Airport Hassle: Carousel Crooks

As travelers get ready for holiday flights, they might want to skip tucking presents into their checked suitcases this year. That's because baggage theft is on the rise.

This year, Delta Air Lines Inc. baggage handlers were caught rifling through suitcases in the belly of airplanes in Hartford, Conn., pocketing laptops, cameras, iPods, GPS units, jewelry, watches and earrings...

For whatever reason, it just seems like common knowledge or common sense to NOT pack anything of value in checked luggage. I know I've read, heard and seen numerous reports about theft from luggage and yet people still pack expensive things and then get upset when it disappears. But then again there a lot of people who can't make it through the TSA screening without causing the lines to back up. Every time there seems to be at least one person debating the finer points of the 311 rule and being upset when the TSA always wins.

Well, y'know, theft is wrong, whether it's predictable or not.

We drive, but we also ship stuff when we travel. That's a lot easier on the return trip if you're visiting relatives who'll get it to the shipping center for you, or if you stay long enough to do it yourself. Not really an option if you're all flying in right before and then flying out again right after the event. If you've got a lot of presents going back, or they're bulky, and especially if you travel with camera and computer, something's going to end up in the suitcase. You can only haul so much with you.
