Rental Car Pick-up Times

How close does one have to be to the pick up time you put on your reservations for rental cars? Recently, I have seen some good rates on rental cars and have booked them before I get airline tickets. A couple of times in the past when I have gone back on line to change the pick-up time their computer system wants to treat it as a new rental and change the rates.

I have had this happen, but it was about 4 years ago. I called the car agency (in my case, Dollar) and told them my flight had been changed. They adjusted the time and honored my price. Wouldn't hurt to ask...
