  • Strangest things/behavior seen while traveling?

    1) I've seen a man on rollerskates with a 30ft cross on wheels over his shoulder traveling in the shoulder of a highway (by rollerskates) (VA).
    2) 2 men walking a Camel on the side of the road (on I-4 Between Tampa and Orlando), their zoo party bus had broken down/run out of gas..
    3) A VERY hairy butt mooning us out a side window of a car (also on I-4).
    4) A crazy guy screaming and attacking a phone booth at a rest area in NJ.

What are the craziest things you've seen when traveling?

Not all that crazy but pretty funny...
I am currently at Southern California Beach Resort, which for some reason has no cell phone coverage inside the units. So all day every day there are people on their patios, balconies, on the 4th (top) floor by the hot tub, etc., trying to make and/or receive calls.

I recall a nightly hike to the top of a hill at one of our ski resorts to see if I had received any messages. The resort was in a valley and the hot spot moved each night. I literally zig zagged the hill, in the pitch black, waving my arm in the air waiting for the screen to light up. Annoyingly the most reliable spot was in the middle of a road.

I am at Candlewood Times Square this week, and this morning we saw someone being arrested outside of Port Authority. My 10 year old niece was fascinated.

I'm sure I've seen a number of interesting things. The first thing that comes to mind is a woman going through a melt down at the ramp door because the plane had closed it's doors and she couldn't get on. You'd think the world had ended. Maybe it had, for her.

Sometimes I really feel sorry for the airline employees who have to deal with irate customers on a daily basis.

The antics of some people with video cameras is a source of great amusement at times. The oddest behaviour, to me at least but clearly not to them as it happens so often, is that of what I would broadly term Asian tourists. Predominantly Japanese and Korean I would guess although I've never actually asked their nationality
In Banff we watched a number of them concentrating hard on filming the signs for the toilets and totally ignoring the amazing views.
From our apartment, watched one marching along with camcorder to eye, doing sharp 90 degree turns (no gentle panning for this guy). His results must have been interesting.
At Lake Louise with arm outstretched to the side, looking into the camera whilst it pointed toward the lake and he looked away from it. I guess his intention was to frame himself with the lake and mountains in the background. The reality would have been either him or the mountains badly out of focus, his own head blocking most of the view anyway, and a very bouncy image.
Just to show that it happens all over the world - another Asian couple in Ronda, Spain were in the oldest bullring in the world but having photos of themselves taken standing in front of a concrete pillar. Not a wide angle view of the place with them in context, just a close up of them and the pillar - bizarre.
I guess they find some of the things we do wierd as well.

              New Orleans

For us it was a women trying to steal booze from a Walgreens in downtown New Orleans and claiming she had nothing as her pants were falling down with big bottles coming out.

At the Novotel Nusa Dua, I watched a young couple eating at a buffet breakfast table next to ours. They took their empty water bottles to the water urn, filled them, returned to their table and put them in a large tote handbag. They then collected a plate full of muffins, returned to their table, produced an empty tupperware container from the tote and loaded in the muffins. Over the course of breakfast, 2 more tupperware containers were produced and loaded with cold meats, cheese, salad and 2 freshly cooked omeletes. Several containers of yoghurt and several pieces of fruit also went into the tote.

They were so discreet, I wouldn’t have noticed if I wasn’t curious about food choices for people of their nationality.

Heck, I felt guilty because I took a muffin with me when I left.

I amused some asian locals when I photographed their toilet sign too . There were 2 different prices according to what you actually passed and the wording for the second part referred to "doing numbers 2's) . I wondered if you had to nominate your intentions before entering or you could just report the outcome on leaving.

We arrived in Orlando early evening and my in-laws picked us up at the airport and we stopped at a waffle house to grab a bite. After getting settled, my kids noticed a man sitting at the counter with a beard -with large hoop earings, lip stick, blouse, regular pants, and high heel shoes. My kids were about 10 and 7 at the time and looked on curiously after they brought this to our attention. We had an interesting conversation following dinner on the drive to grandma's. They still talk about that today with laughter. To each their own.
