  • How good or bad is Continental? And how about flying out of Newark?

Looking into flights to Orlando and able to see a very reasonable fare out of Newark (as opposed to JFK/LaGuardia). A little longer drive which is worth it for the savings, but I'm wondering how Continental is in general as I can't remember the last time I've been on a Continental flight, and we will of course have zero status. Also, how is Newark as a place to travel to and from?

    Thanks!!

    Fine and fine...

My kids find it very easy living in NYC to use Newark, no complaints about the terminals, etc.
I believe they have Avistar Parking there as well.

Thanks Pat. Still ruminating. But I think we are moving in that direction, especially after seeing the really good airfare price. Husband, who does not really like to travel, would actually like to go...so that's a big plus right there!

Fine and fine, like Pat said. Actually, I loathe JFK and would take anything going out of Newark (or LaGuardia) in preference. I only use JFK when it's an absolutely impossible to beat deal, and then I usually regret it.

I'm in Continental's FF program. They're fine. I've flown them internationally and domestically many times.

I have elite status on Continental. I live 35 minutes from EWR and CO is the major carrier of of EWR. I think it is better than JFK..CO's terminal is nice. Try for a flight around noon- terminal is less crowded. Early mornings are always long lines for security.

Avistar has online coupons you can print out.

I'm 90 minutes from Newark and still fly out of there using Continental a couple of times a year. I've always liked them and also prefer that airport over either LGA or JFK.

I'd say its a no brainer!

Continental one of the better airlines

I live halfway between Newark and Philadelphia and fly Continental out of Newark every couple months. Unlike some other airlines, I've always been happy with them.

Been a few years, but if I had a choice I would take Continental. Flew out of Newark several times to Cancun--prefer Bradley, but direct flights were not available until recently. I hate the little planes that fly between Bradley and Newark and believe safety is lower with them than the big planes.

We fly out of Newark at least once per year and always on Continental. Have had no problems with either. They have a lot of non-stop flights to Caribbean. we usually stay at the Hilton the night before, thereby getting their park and fly package. It's in a locked garage...

I have recently comped my elite status over to CO from NW to escape the DL takeover. I have flown through Newark a few times, and it is okay, although I much prefered two of NW's gateways to Europe. CO is a step down from NW in some ways, but still a fine airline, and it has one of the best ff programs out there.

Where are you traveling from? Depending on how much you're hauling and time of day, you might consider taking the train to EWR for your flight. I've traveled into NYC that way when I fly into EWR, but there's no reason you couldn't go out that way as well.

CO is fine. Just flew EWR-TPA in Nov. Do not use the economy parking at the airport. Use Avistar or something similar.

I don't have elite status on NW but do have miles...do they transfer to CO or is it just a status comp thing?

Thanks to all for the input on the parking as well. Given my daughter's health needs (more limited stamina), we often go for the more expensive parking options if they make it easier for her. We do have a handicapped pass which sometimes yields a discount.

No, just a status thing. I do wish I could convert my old NW WP miles to CO or AA or BMI. If there were a way to do it, I would gladly have given 2 NW/DL miles for every one of the others, probably even 3 for 1 with BMI.

Look on the Newark Airport site for handicapped parking into. Years ago my FIL had a handicapped placard and they let him park in the short-term lot at the long-term price. It was such an incredible deal that I still remember it 20 years later!
