  • Trip insurance for large group

I'm putting together a group trip for a giant birthday party in Cabo.

I've found what I want thru VRBO and am looking into their Rental Guarantee program (~$135 with some stringent "within 2 hours" rules and other fine print that I will have to mull over when In Good Brain). Not sure it will be the coverage I seek on "place to stay no matter what" but haven't made up my mind. Accoms should be below $10k total, their limit, but what it covers seems extremely narrow. Any experience with it??

More concerned about emergency medical, sudden job loss, death in family and the like where any couple could have to drop out. When booking a group, I'm assuming each participant will need to get their own trips ins? Is there even such a thing as Group Trip Ins? Is there a specific plan/company recommended? Haven't been to InsureMyTrip yet as I know there is a vast array of products but not sure where to focus.

If I am The Booker, would I need to get my trip ins to cover the accoms or does each person cover "their share?"

Just not sure what to do and thought there were things like, must purchase insurance within X days of booking trip and such.

I'm a total novice at trip ins and have been lucky so far to have not needed it. But with a large group, I want to make sure I get it right!

    thanks for any suggestions!

AccessAmerica.com - Travel Insurance for Leisure and Business Travel

Each person will be individually covered based on their age and the coverage they need.

KathyQ - who is handling the booking of my families' cruise for 17 people - was able to meet everyone's needs. Some of our party needed the additional coverage of having to cancel because of work related issues which would usually not be covered and for less then $25 pp, we were able to add that to the people who needed it.

Also, when I say 'need' I mean that some cabins were more expensive then others so some people needed $2300 covered while others needed $1600. You can also add airfare into the totals which we did not need as we are cruising from our home city.

You have 2 weeks from booking your travel to buy this.

My other thought - if there are 20 people going - and 'joe' can't go - I am assuming everyone else would still go - so u would only need to cover 'joe' for his share. So at 10K, you would need $500 + airfare coverage for 'joe'.

If there are mandatory AI fees involved, you also need to look at that.

Thanks Pat!!! The 2 weeks, THANK YOU, I knew there was a deadline.

No AI, renting 2 giant houses. Yes, air will vary due to people coming from different parts of the states, some having FF miles but many having to pay cash.

Yes, if Joe drops out, we're still going without having to cancel a unit. Beyond an arbitrary "finalization" date that I have set (roughly 45 days before check-in), Joe will forfeit his share of rent if he drops out. Since these are friends and family, I would certainly refund Joe if Susan took his place and paid in full.

Our final pmt is August for a trip in Feb. I figured that "anything could happen" after August, so thought a Final Count/Final Cost deadline would be needed.

        Thanks so much!
