the poll is broken. it assumes hotel is only option, and is worded wrong - do you get more than one hotel room, do you not stay in hotel...? etc

I've always known I wasn't average, but aside from swimmeets, our family never slept 5 to a room and never had 2 rooms.

The poll is appropriate for the Branson forum, which favors cheap hotels and motels, and has great opposition to timeshares.

Replies in the poll thread do mention the advantages of condos. But, even with condos being offered at lower-than-motel prices, there are few takers. . . &, don't even mention timeshare.

When I was growing up, when vacation meant visiting and staying with family, I thought maybe that was just because of the times, and that there were not many motels, but now that there are lots of motels, and lots of deals, I'm surprised that families cram into one room. I would expect more to have adjoining rooms, with Mom and Dad in one and the kids in the other.

When I was a kid we took "road trips". And that meant all 4 of us staying in one room. When we take vacations with the dds, when we don't stay in a timeshare, we stay in a hotel, all 4 in one room. Why? Because it's cheaper. Most of the time we're not in the room that much and we'd rather be spending the money elsewhere.

Why in the world do people in the Branson forum prefer cheap hotels?

They're hard to get. We've been promised them a couple of times then it turned out they didn't have them. We've even been handed keys and told they were adjoining rooms, then gotten to the rooms and no such thing. Suites seem to work out better.

I agree with Luanne that people cram into hotel rooms because it's cheaper, but at this point we can generally get a condo for less than what two rooms would cost us anyhow. Our problem is that condos aren't always available where we need to stop for the night.

Hang around that forum long enough and you will not have to ask that question.

Could it be a sign of the times that folks are more open about how thrifty they are?

I do. It never prevent me not take a hotel, as long as they have at least 2 full size bed. When my kids get older, I will take hotel as long as they have 2 Queen size bed.

With 1BD TS, someone will sleep in the sofa bed anyway. and some of the sofa bed should be retired long ago. Of course, I understand someone may bring their sleeping bag. But that is too much for me.

But if 2 Bd TS is visible options, I will take TS.

If it is choice between 1BD TS or Hotel it probably is 70% to 30% of my preferenece.

When I was a kid the folks always got the bed while us kids slept on the floor. Sometimes we used sleeping bags but I think we used blankets from home a lot too. Usually I recall 3 kids (ages 3 to 12) sleeping on the floor. We always had an electric skillet along for cooking breakfast in the room too.

My wife insisted on beds for our kids when they were young.

Now when we're bringing them along I trade for a 2+B or get multiple units.

Back to that, I don't know.

You tell me why a family of four or five would cram into a motel room when they could get a nice a condo for the same money.

These folks are already on the Internet, on the forum, so they should be able to google for the abundance of overbuilt, underused condos and timeshares.

So far this year I have only been able to get $200 and $300 for a week in a 2B/2B Gold Crown, with all the bells and whistles. Others others I know own, sit empty.

I'll have to remember that when I get to Branson. DH is resistant to the idea of going there. He says it's for old people. I have news for him...we're not so young anymore.

                    JLB, where do you advertise?

When our kids were younger we always did house rentals at the beach with the inlaws etc.. everyone had a bed... I think we all crammed into hotel room once but it was a quick overnighter waiting to get on a cruise the next day.

I am always hesitant to bring anyone with us for our TS vacations.. I mean what adult wants to sleep in the living room on a pull out? And sometimes I just can't tell if its a separate room or a pull out from the descriptions!

Even on a road trip to a TS vacation, our family of 5 now takes 2 hotel rooms for those 'on the road' stops. (It does help to get great Priceline 'name your own price' deals, so my cost for 2 rooms is about the normal cost of 1 room.) Before TS'ing and when the kids were young we did stay a few times in one hotel room/suite. That was OK for a few days if we were spending minimal time in the hotel and the room/suite was sufficiently large; a 'standard' budget hotel room really wasn't large enough ( a Branson Econolodge stay comes to mind ... ).
After 2 BR TS condos, I would not want to spend vacation time in a motel/hotel, even if it was 2 rooms.
