  • Travel Insurance in case of Death in the Family?

On Labor Day weekend I have a week confirmed to a resort out west.

However my Step Father is terminally ill, and is deteriorating as the weeks go by.

I have not made my flight plans, or rented a car.

I want to finalize my plans soon, and also get Travel Insurance for this trip.

What type of Travel Insurance should I purchase if my Step Father does unfortunately pass away near the beginning, or during my trip?

Will Travel Insurance cover me in case I need to return on unplanned flight? Or if I need to cancel my flight?

    Thanks in Advance,

    Bill

I have an annual policy with Access America and had a claim when my Father in Law ended up in the hospital. The claim was paid as the doctor had indicated his illness was new and not related to pre-existing conditions even though he had many medical issues. If you FIL's illness is due to pre existing conditions, there are not many policies that will cover you.
I would look for a "Cancel for any reason" policy. It will be more expensive, but no documentation is needed. I don't know if it will cover you once your trip starts....do read the fine print carefully, every policy is different...

I am reading up now on the various policies. Actually reviewing the Policy MVCI offers on their site from CSA.

      Thanks,

Most policies will cover pre-existing conditions if you buy them within a 7-14 day window of booking your airfare/hotels. Most will not cover timeshares anyway, so that is not an issue. Check out Travel Insurance - InsureMyTrip.com for a good website that compares policies.

No advice, just sympathy at a difficult time.

I tried to get an annual Timeshare Policy - Maria Pizza had posted about it - but it was not open to NYS residents.
It was extremely well priced - MUCH less then the ones offered by Marriott, Starwood and II.
