  • Well that was one way to get out of paying for a Checked bag

I just found out that if you fly Delta and you have a Gold or Platinum American express card that you get 1 free checked bag for your self and up to 9 people that are traveling with you. Lucky for me I am flying Delta next Monday and Amex is doing a 3 day rush on my new card.
I am not sure if other airlines also have a similar promotion.

I don't know about the "best" deal but we got the first year free and 30,000 Delta miles for a gold card. Then it goes to $95 per year. One trip pays for it (2 people RT) but I do not like having to pay for a credit card. We will see whether we want to renew it when the time comes. But the intro deal is very attractive.

P.S. - They are very quick with crediting the miles - almost as soon as you make your first purchase and before the bill even comes. I was impressed with that.

They have been promoting the heck out of that card here in the former NWA headquarters trying to get us NWA people to use their AMEX card. I have never been fond of the idea of paying for a card, and since we typically only do two airline trips, it would save $100 and cost $95 for the card. It saves $5. Beyond that, does it pay to have that card? I think Delta credits miles to the card, but I have to look more into it to have that type of card vs. free card with miles.

Change that-$25/bag X 2 (ppl) X 2 (round trip) X 2 (vacations) = $200 per year in free checked in baggage - $95 annual fee. Well, may be that does make sense. But, if I compare it to a card that gives me 2 miles per dollar, still need to figure out which way I will be better off.

If Delta's FF program wasn't so bad, I'd have considered getting an AE card. As it is Delta has become just about the last airline we consider when booking a trip. Right down their with USAirways.

What I'm wondering is if they'll give you the free baggage on your upcoming flight or if they'll try to tell you that you had to book your flight using the card to get the free checked bags.

We booked our flights months before we had the card and there was no issue. As a matter of fact, when we checked in online, the system knew we were card members and allowed us one free bag each. I assume they tie it into your ff number. We did not need to show the card at all.

The key is to be a card member on the day you fly, not the day you buy the ticket.

Both my wife and I signed up for the card last summer and each got 40K miles and the first year free. I kept the card and my wife cancelled hers. We used the miles along with some AMEX membership rewards miles to get FF 1st class Hawaii tkts for next March. I use it, and the Marriott black(Premier) Chase VISA card for Marriott MRPs.

Good point. What are the restrictions? Can you buy both tickets on the website? We have until May to decide whether we renew.

My wife took her Portable O2 Concentrator last week with no charge. AFAIK, it doesn't "count" as either a carry-on (or checked bag if you check it). At least that's the way it worked for us. We also gate checked her wheelchair.

                              Cheers
