  • $800 for Rental Cars in Orlando!!!!!!

I also posted this on TUG

I need all of the advice that I can get.

    Thanks
    Fish

The kids and grandkids are flying in to spend Wk 8 ( Feb 19-Feb 26 ) with us at Star Island this year and had intended to rent a car for the week. I'll have my car, but we thought two would be better because I would like to golf each day.

Rental car rates are so insane that I don't believe that I will even be able to Priceline an affordable deal.

I know that Star Island has a shuttle- does anyone know what the rates would be for 3 adults and 3 children?

It might just be better to take a taxi each way for the number of days that they will go to the Parks.

Does anyone have an idea what a taxi would cost each way? Approximately?

At $700/week, I think that we could probably take quite a few taxis.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

    Thanks

Just wait it out. Check every day and be ready to pounce when you see an acceptable number. Look for discount codes from places like Costco, Sam's Club, even Walmart. If it gets to 3 weeks before your trip, you are probably stuck but I bet prices drop at some point before that.

I just plugged in your dates with National and got a base rate of under $300.

I checked Hotwire and they are outta sight. My gut says this is one that won't get better. There is such a shortage of Economy cars that they are $110/day.

          Ref No. silkCarRefNum3:3428940775
CarPrice3: $110.77 and up, per day
          $678.97 total*
          CarTypeName3:Economy car

We had the same problem for January, and I took New Year's Eve out of the equation and that dropped the rates over $400 for two weeks. But your week is all a holiday week, one of the busiest in Orlando.

                Here's a possibility.

I just HWed Orlando/City, instead of MCO, for 2/19-2/26 and the rates start at 26.43/day for economy. $28.43 for a fullsize. Under $300/week.

The next page tells you where each car is at at that price. The full size is at an Enterprise 5.4 miles from MCO.

All of the locations are less than 6 miles from the airport.

So, it is the airport location that has the shortage. Pick it up and drop it off and a less expensive location.

& my gut tells me this will change the longer you wait.

that's a great idea, a 6 mile taxi ride has to be less than the 300 to 500 difference in price...

I checked further into that HW Orlando search and up to Premium there are reasonable rates. All of the good rates are at Enterprise locations, and not the same ones.

After Enterprise, the next lower rates are similar to at MCO, double to triple Enterprise. No one other than Enterprise has good rates left, and not all the Enterprises.

So, if'n ya want something under $300 ($3000 Canadian ), get yurself on over to Hotwire and grab it.

                        Must you encurage him?

Be careful. This trick does work particularly well in Florida but a lot of Enterprise locations are closed on Sundays and/or have shorter hours than customary for rental car desks. Verify hours of operation with your itinerary before committing.

Along BF's train of thought, I have used HW as a PL bidding guide for as long as both of them have been around. Mostly for hotels. I would bid lower on PL, knowing I could always go get the HW deal. But that is not always the case. You can be pennywise and pound foolish, risking losing a good deal to try to get a better one, fail, and then not have the HW deal there any more.

Like I said about my gut, and the experience I have had recently getting a Florida rental car during a holiday period, those HW Enterprise prices are close to being too low to mess around with and risk losing.

Like I said before, since HW shows you everything, when I open each size up there is very little at the low prices, then it jumps WAY up.

You have already cut it from $800 to under $300 and there can't be much more left to cut in a very popular holiday week in Orlando.

                            But . . .

If you wanna try PL, do it quick and get it over with.

                              Thanks for everyone's help.

I just talked to my daughter who got something off Hotwire, 5.6 miles from MOC for $227.00 all in.

This is a refundable reservation and is a great deal for this week.

                              Thanks again
