We will be visiting Quebec City in May. Does anybody have any suggestions for a hotel? Would like to be within walking distance of Old Quebec.

    Thanks in advance,

    Nancy

Nancy, when we went a few years ago we stayed at a nice hotel quite close to the train station. I was going to say we were in Old Quebec, but I don't think we were. I know we were within walking distance since we didn't have a car. I'm going to go see if I kept any of the information.

I checked and unfortunately although I kept the tour book, I didn't keep the name of the hotel. I think it was inside the walls, and I know it had a side exit out through their restaurant onto a cobblestone street. But, other than that I know nothing. I can't even remember how I found out about it.

Friends were there in August, stayed at a Frommer pick -- Old Dominion Hotel - see below::::

"This is where we stayed in Quebec City. It's in the old city, but the lower part. You have to walk to the funicular to get to the upper city, but we really liked this hotel. "

Thanks for help. Have decided to get a timeshare at St. Anne
        Beupre. Anyone been there?

Yes, at Club Vacances Toutes Saisons, last time 2007 I think.

          Good choice.

Yes that is where we are staying. Has very mixed reviews, but we aren't picky. Have a 3 bedroom unit for DH, Son and myself so should have plenty of room. Originally wanted to say in Old Quebec proper, but think this will work nicely.

I live in Quebec city .

Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré is not exactly close to Old quebec ( 35-40 minutes drive) so you will be renting a car I guess .

If you need any info on things to do, restaurants , etc , I will be pleased to help you !

We will have our car. Realize it is 30 - 40 minutes out. Where is a good place to park in town? Is there bus service from Ste. Anne Beaupre? If so, how is it?

Thanks for help offer. I know we will have more questions. We are coming in May and will be celebrating our 45 Anniversary while there.

ps. We thought about this for quite awhile before deciding to stay in Ste. Anne Beaupre.

There are a few parking garages in the old city if you can't get a spot on the street. Or, park just outside the gates, since the old city is quite walkable for most.

Threre’s no bus or shuttle from Beaupré . You’ll have to use your car . There 28 public parking in or near Old Quebec. The one I use when I want to park in the heart of Old Quebec is the City Hall parking lot :

                    Address : 2 rue des Jardins , Quebec, G1R 4A2

When I want to be closer to the St-Lawrence river , I use the 2 available parking lots on rue Dalhousie.

Parking your car on the street is possible, but there are “ parcomètres” ( paying machines ) almost everywhere now. Cost 25 cents per 7,5 minutes but you have time limits varying from 2 to 5 hours depending where you are .

                    Some info :

On your way to your resort you will cross St-Anne-de-Beaupré where you will find usual services ( groceries , Mcdonald , gas ) . Up the hill is Beaupré where you’ll be staying. It’s close to the bottom of Mont-Ste-Anne ski center. There are 2 restaurants very close to your place ; “ L’Aventure “ and the “St-Bernard pub” . The St-Bernard offers excellent quality price.

Worth mentioning : The Mont Ste-Anne area is located EAST of Quebec city , about 30 miles from Baie-St-Paul ; worth a stop on the main streets where there are nice artists shops. Then another 30 miles east is the Charlevoix region , a really beautiful and bucolic region. If you’re here for a week , it’s a must .

We'll also be in Beaupre the end of September for a week and plan at least two days in Quebec City sightseeing. Any suggestions for restaurants and "must sees" in QC would be appreciated. TIA

Les Chutes Montmorency and l'Ile d'Orleans are worth the trip, IMHO, just outside QC.
Oh, a little factoid: Samuel de Champlain, who founded Quebec, was my great-great-great-great-great grandfather (I think that's the right number of greats!)

Here’s a link for the 12 must-sees in Quebec city

                          Must-See Attractions

In fact , staying in Beaupré is great because you’ll get 3 of the must-sees on your way from Beaupré to Quebec city :
                          1) Ste-Anne de Beaupré and the Cathedral
                          2) Montmorency Falls
                          3) Isle of Orleans

5 of the other must-sees are in or near Old Quebec .

                          As for restaurants ,

Old Quebec ( near the Chateau Frontenac ), 2 of the best and known rest. In the city:
                          Le Continental

                          Restaurant Le Continental

                          Le Café de la Paix

Les meilleures tables du Qubec : Restaurant Caf de la Paix

Old Port (near the St-Lawrence river)

Le Café du Monde, ( a typical French Bistro with a great view on the St-Lawrence River )

Le Café du Monde [ Café bistro ]

there’s a well know restaurant near le Café du monde called , “ Laurie Raphael “ …. very and I mean very expensive ..AVOID .

Because the area is so rich with things to do I would recommend purchasing the Lonely Planet guide to Montreal and Quebec City (2nd ed 2010)

I am watching this thread with interest - Montreal and a side trip to Quebec City are high on my list of trips to plan. Some great info here, thanks!
