I was supposed to be on Alitalia coming back across the pond in a couple of weeks, but much to my chagrin got switched to the substantially inferior service of Delta. Except for Northwest, I try as hard as I can to avoid flying US-based carriers trans-Atlantic. At least, I am still on Air France outbound.

I also decided that I would try to avoid at all cost changing planes in a foreign country. Now I try to change planes in NY or ATL if I cannot get a nonstop from LAX.

There was a time when flyers said BA should have stood for ''Bloody Awful'', too. In the past decade many European carriers have improved while carriers on this side of the pond have slid downhill. US-based carriers now seem closer to EasyJet than to European majors.
On my Alitalia flights in the last few years, the meals have been head and shoulders above what I have gotten trans-Atlantic on Delta, the booze has been free, as opposed to the $5 a pop on Delta, the FA's courteous, and they have had an adequate supply of a variety of newspapers for passengers, something that hasn't happened on Delta trans-Atlantic in years.
The only Alitalia route I would avoid is Rome to Bucharest, which both my wife and son have flown on several occaisions, consistently with bad service.
They have both flown other Alitalia routes and have been very pleased with the service on other routes. I have had good service myself on all of the routes, both trans-Atlantic and intra-Europe that I have flown on Alitalia.
The only European carrier I have flown that I would tend to avoid compared to a US carrier is Olympic.
I think all trans-Atlantic carriers, even Aeroflot, now prohibit smoking.
Originally posted by shortI flew Alitalia about 12 years ago and pledged never to do so again. The FA's were rude, the seats and molding in the lavs were coming apart. They still allowed smoking at the time so 12 hours on a nonstop in a plane with smokers was agony. My head was about the size of a basketball when I arrived.
