I have never used hot-wire. Are there any "tricks" to getting a good rate.
I need a car for two weeks in CA and one week in FL.
With Hotwire and Priceline, you need to pick up and drop off at an airport.
Betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com will show you what kinds of prices other people have gotten at your target airports.
The most important thing is to know what the major rental companies are charging for the car you want. I usually make a cancellable reservation at the best price I can get at one of the big companies. Then I check Hotwire in the late morning or early afternoon.
If you see Hotwire prices drop significantly, then you can go over to Priceline and try bidding LOWER than the Hotwire price. Don't bid at Priceline or take a Hotwire car unless the price difference between the regular car agency and the Hotwire/Priceline cost is significant, because as you know, Priceline and Hotwire aren't cancellable.
On the bright side, I've gotten some great deals on cars at Hotwire and Priceline. Plus they use only the big car agencies, so you know you're going to be using a decent agency.
