For some reason I've usually gotten cars through Hotwire and hotels through Priceline.

Remember to watch the add-on fees. People were posting here a few months ago about Priceline adding extra fees to car rentals.

Hotwire does it too. I watched my same car go down in daily price but up in fees-so it kept ending up nearly the same.

What I ended up with on Hotwire and I can't remember what color it was-was not a blind reservation. It came up Hertz and little radio button to push for a reservation that didn't require a credit card and you could cancel it. I was leary-but it didn't ask for my CC so I did it and then went over to Hertz and entered the reservation number and it came up priced just like Hotwire said. 4.50 a day. Maybe it was a special just that day that Hertz promoted? I don't know.

I know on Hotwire prices come up in red and some in gray/black. The red always says Hotwire price. If you click a gray/black price it shows you the company. So-if you see one of those and the price is decent-you should be able to book it without your CC and consequently cancel it if you find something else. It's the red prices that are blind (in company name) and require prepayment.

      Glitter,

Could you get by with an SUV or does it have to be a minivan? I see SUV's out there for decent prices. Nothing like car pricing obviously but if it came down to it-could you get by on an SUV?

Looks like there are some rentals for Avis.

Avis Coupon Codes - all coupons, discounts and promo codes for avis.com

Of course, if you have Triple A- they have rental discounts with Hertz Car rental.
Thanks - even with the discount, Avis is $660

Tough one. We are four adults (or at least adult-sized) and two kids. I think the SUV back seats are too inaccessible for us - the big guys won't sit back there and the little ones can't... thanks for the thought, though. I'm getting ready to bite the $500 bullet but I will do as Wacky suggests and make a cancelable ressie first.

Gotcha. Thought it was a party of 4 not 6. Try this too Rental Car Discounts and Codes

Start with the state map clicking through until you click on your destination. It will pull up tourist info in between each car rental company. You have to price each company one by one by clicking on their discount code button but it will take you directly to each site and usually the coupon code is retained when you click..or it offers you different discounts to try.

            Good Luck!

That's a great link, thank you!! I reserved one through Budget, but will now poke around the other sites to see if I can do better.

                FYI

AAA member? Hertz will provide 1 car seat free of charge with AAA membership. Will also allow second driver free if they are AAA member. I'd also check AAA for current discount codes.

No, but prob should do that for the extras if not the discount - AAA usually around 10% and there have usually been better discounts around than that other places, even through RCI

Do you subscribe to Mousesavers? They have a whole section on car rentals with lots of discount codes for different companies. They are applicable all over, not just in Florida. Also, can't remember if you checked Costco for discounts. Costco rentals include second driver for free.
