I'll send you a guest invite to a few days at Meadow Lake if you want - (pm me)
Traveling out of the country with my daughter is a bit of an issue, me and her mother aren't together, though we are civil, there's no love, but no hate either, stealing a line from a movie, we were meant to have a child together...but not to BE together....so even with that, taking her out of the country is a bit of an obstacle...alot of places don't like single parents going out of the country with a child

Meadow Lake is in Montana? That maybe something i have to wait on...work my way west

All you need to take her out of the country is a notarized letter signed by her mother giving you permission. There aren't many places that will ask you for it, but good to have just in case. Easier if you have the same last name, though your mileage may vary.

Why leave the country? There are so many beautiful places to visit right here. Do you like the National Parks or do you prefer cities? How does your dauther feel about it? Where does she like to go? She may be too young to appreciate traveling outside the country and can always do that later. You sound like a good Dad.

I like the idea of the big wall map. It will give her an idea where all the places are and it's a fun way for her to learn her geography. I have no idea how old she is.

Favorite places for my children when they were young:
          • Boston, Cape Cod and Newport
          • Williamsburg, Baltimore Inner Harbor, Washington
          • Vermont is a must for winter break - great family resorts to start her on skis, snowboarding or tubing.
          • Hilton Head, Charleston, Savanah
          • Hershey Park
          • San Francisco, Muir Woods, Lake Tahoe
          • SoCal - beaches, surfing, Legoland
          • Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Park City
          • Phoenix, Sedona and Grand Canyon
          • Of course, Orlando, with an add-on to the Kennedy Space Center

Like you, I had a hard time deciding where to go because there were too many choices. I started keeping a five-year calendar and pencil-in destinations I want to exchange for - this way I'm not excluding anything, just postponing to another year.

My advice is to do as much as you can with DD before she turns 12-13, because when she reaches that age, even if she still wants to travel with you, she will want to bring a friend. And before you know it, you'll be visiting her while she's spending a semester abroad

          Have fun planning!

          Maria

You are right about Spain being overbuilt. It is easy to trade (or rent) into the Costa del Sol or the Canary Islands. But I think a child would be fascinated more with staying in a real medieval castle like Schloss Grubhof in Austria close to Salzburg, and there are other castles not too far away.

I happen to love going to Arizona, another easy trade and often short TPU in the shoulder season. Like WHO wants to be in Phoeniz in August??? But just a short drive(well not really short about 2 hours) up 17 and you're in Sedona and can see several National Parks using Sedona as a base.

What about the Southern california Coast? Again shoulder season can find some deals.

I don't know where you live, but I am thinking Mid-Atlantic area? What about being a tourist in your own back yard and spending a few days at National harnbor and seeing DC?

I was thinking of the Spain thing for Ride as a "not family" vacation, but Carolinian, I agree, if traveling with his daughter staying at the medieval castle would be like being in Cinderella's castle!

I'm not sure if you have been to Disney, this has defiintely been my children's favorite destination. My oldest is now 18 and going off to university and still loves to travel with us, especially if we are going to Disney.

You're never too old for Disney.

I'll add my voice to Sedona/Flagstaff. If you haven't done the Grand Canyon you will be amazed. AMAZED!

My other options would be the Oregon coast (Newport/Lincoln City), or one you probably won't consider - Mazatlan (great city, great food, great people, new culture for your daughter to see).

Whatever you select, I'm sure the both of you will have a great time as you'll be there together.

edit: When I was growing up my parents took my sister and I cross country by car (to Alabama and Iowa) every other year. Each time we went a different route and saw almost the whole country (no New England or Florida though). I used to complain every trip; my sister and I fought and I used to get car sick. As an adult (which I am sometimes) I am VERY glad to have been exposed to all the sights and history. I may not have wanted to see presidential birthplaces or national monuments at the time, but I will treasure the memories.
