  • Forced and Bogus Travel Insurance

My husband used my American Express to book a SW flight for himself and his brother. I was looking at my recent transactions today and found that American Express charged him $9.95 pp for Travel insurance. I looked it up and see that AE does that automatically. You have to opt out.

Another company in FL doing business as: Baggage Insurance charged $9.95pp.

Another company in WI doing business as: RBB AFI PREMIUMS charged $8.99pp for for airline insurance.

I also see that a couple days after he rented a car in Seattle recently, he was charged for premium car rental insurance for $17.45 from a company in NY doing business as Premium Car Rental Insurance.

Seriously,WTF? I am making him call since they are his transactions. I have more problems with security with AE than any other card. In the last 5 years, I've had at least one problem per year. After my husband gets the charges removed, I am going to tell AE to shove it and cancel my card.

I have had an AmEx several years and have never had to "opt out" of any such program -- I doubt that is your problem.

However, I do get several offers each year for a "free" subscription, membership, day-planner, or other trinket to sign up for service (travel club, etc.) that is usually offered as "free" and "cost nothing to sign up". However, if you don't cancel within a certain amount of time (usually 90 days), they enroll you in their program automatically.

Are you sure you or your husband didn't sign up for anything like this? I have a hard time believing AmEx would force you to "opt out" without you agreeing to something in the first place.

That's my guess too. I have two different AmEx (one "house" card, and one airline card). I've charged airfare to both in the last few weeks---nothing like this.

He did sign up for something that was travel insurance. I would hope he would at least know enough to read it, but I shall find out later today.

This is where I got the need to opt out information https://www295.americanexpress.com/f...lay/product.do

Now that I am looking at it more, it looks like maybe he did sign up for something that would charge insurance at a bunch of different places. Going to be a fun conversation tonight.

I have the automatic insurance on rental cars with Amex. It applies to all my Amex cards. It's the same price regardless of length of rental, so I only use the Amex card for lengthy rentals.
