  • Frigging Rental Car Companies

    DW arrived in FL with her mom and a friend of her mom's, picks up the rental car, and goes to eat. She calls me to let me know they're there, and says the fuel gauge is a really strange one and she can't tell if it is pointing at empty or full, but says she'll call and ask them.

    1/2 later she calls and says she was in the middle of nowhere, 10 at night, and the low fuel light came on.

    Yeah, they gave her an empty car and then lied to her about it.

    I didn't used to be the kinda guy that would say someone oughta get fired, but someone oughta get fired. Yeah, I know, it's next to impossible to fire even the worst employees any more.

    Wow! 52 views with no reply. That's amazing.

    It took me an hour and a maze of phone numbers and people unable to do anything about it (Hertz has no Customer Service phone # it appears), before a/the manager in Tampa called me. Then she would not deal with anyone but DW, so DW will have to be the one to deal with it while on her vacation.

    One of the calls I made was to the counter where she picked it up, and the lady there said she had no idea what could have happened.

    (chuckle)

    How about the guy/gal who preps your cars didn't put any gas in it?

          The Hertz manager was very nice to DW, but said that since it was a prepaid (Priceline) reservation, she was limited in what she could do. She said to return the car empty and that she will get an upgrade or gas voucher for a future rental.

          Getting Hertz again would just be the luck of the draw, so future stuff has little meaning.

            Did you try to find one at hertz.com? I use Hertz all the time for business travel and never had an issue. I bet the person prepping the car was confused as well and thought it was full!

              It's not just customer service issues with Hertz, but I have found customer service lacking in many areas.

              I was in AZ a week or two ago and actually walked away from the rental counter and rented a car from another vendor, even though I paid more for the rental. I have reached a point in my life where it matters more how I am treated, than what something costs.

              I am sorry your DW had such trouble with the rental car. Delivering a car to a renter that is near empty is horrible. There is no reason every rental car should not be "topped" off before the next renter gets it. We all know that when you fill up it may be 30 miles from the turn in point and in many cases the gauge will still say "full" but the tank isn't.

                      And if had happened to me, I would just start calling those numbers starting with Reservations. They'll get you to the right place.
