  • Driving from Long Island to Massanutten Saturday

So i changed my Rental car pickup time to save me a few bucks...I pick it up at Noon on Saturday the 18th, the only problem i'm seeing is....Its an 7-8hr drive and we are going to have to stop for dinner

So my guess is i'll be right about between Fredricksburg and Harrisburg PA around dinner time, on I78/I81

Anyone have suggestions for a good place for dinner not that far off I78/I81 around that area? It's just going to be me and a 6yr old, so it doesn't have to be fancy

    Thanks!

My son and I always stop at Cracker Barrel when we do these types of road trips. They are all over the place out that way. The best onion rings in the known universe.

I have a car, but i work 8 minutes from where i live so what i really own is a beater, that is just reliable enough to get me to and from work on a daily basis....i don't trust it for long drives...

I'm sure i could go out and buy something better or more reliable, but when all i really need it for on a daily basis is that 8 minutes to and from work, i can't picture dropping 10k-25k on something just for that, i'm kinda a cheap skate

Some people just like to rent cars. My husband always wants us to rent a car if we are driving over 150 miles from home. His car is less than 3 years old and mine is about 8 and both drive great. He just doesn't like putting extra miles on our cars.

At least it prevents me from having to get all the stuff out of my trunk to make way for suitcases. Inline skates, scooters, helmets, beach toys, extra emergency clothes, snow shovel, etc.

OMG...I stopped at Crackerbarrel in Orlando a few months ago and was shocked at the amount of food that we got for very little dollars. We were all just looking at each other as they kept asking us what other "sides" we wanted. BTW, they threw in french fries & onion rings on some orders that didn't come with them, or weren't chosen. It was wild! We still talk about it every once in a while.......I don't think I've ever been given so much food, for such a small amount of money. And yes, the onion rings were very good!

Typical order is to split a chef's or cobb salad and get a double order of rings. Still have left overs...and teenage boys can EAT.

DO not order the cooked until dead green beans.

                Burgers are also yum.

Who knew? I've only eaten there maybe once before, and I didn't remember anything about them. It was a very long time ago. Next time, I'll know better.

I've never been to a Cracker Barrel. Maybe our next vacation!

But we've driven from Harrisburg to Fredericksburg and there's really not a lot in between if you go via 74, which is what Mapquest recommends. In Fredericksburg, there's a huge mall right off the highway with every kind of chain restaurant or fast food you could want. Harrisburg also has lots of places, mostly chains, right by the highway.

If you're going via York, PA, and Owings Mills and closer to Baltimore and Washington, you'll have more choices.

And to think I've only been stopping there to use the restrooms - no lines and cleaner than most rest stops.

I've only been to Cracker Barrell once. It was okay. However I have a "friend" who considers Cracker Barrell to be "Fine Southern Dining".

Am i allowed to eat 'Fine Southern Dining' if my family has been in NY since it was settled in the 1650's?
