  • Wizz Air charging for carry on luggage

Wizz Air has announced a new ''enhancement'' to make travel more comfortable, imposing a charge on standard size carry on luggage, and their standard size is a bit smaller and lighter than US carriers to begin with, only 10kg, about 22 pounds. Their checked luggage has long carried a charge. The only thing free now is a mini-carry on, like a brief case.

This makes Ryan Air more attractive among LCC's, but it would not surprise me if they copied this charge.

I can understand why some of these airlines want to charge for carry ons.
Some people will try to bring an elephant onboard if they could and put it in the overhead bin.

Obviously, you have not travelled on WizzAir, which has the same carry on policies as Ryan Air. They have for a long time rigidly enforced their sizers, which you have to pass getting ready to board, with airline employees there making anyone with a questionable bag dip it in the sizer to be sure it passes. Ryan Air even gives bonuses to employees who catch passengers with oversized carry ons (which is actually a cut of the late checked bag fee the passenger then has to pay). They also rigidly weigh all carryons and make you include anything you are carrying like a camera. No, it is NOT a carryon plus a personal item. The personal item must go in the carryon, which must then fit in the sizer, and pass the weight test (10kg = 22lbs.). I don't know any more that these LCC's could do to be luggage nazis. All of this is VERY rigidly enforced.

It is hard enough to fly Wizz and pass muster with just a carry on, although I have always done so to both not have to pay a checked luggage fee and to avoid putting my luggage into the tender mercies of the Baggage Mishandlers / luggage throwers / luggage losers employed by the airlines. Traveling light is how I fly, and having to pay for the privelege is an insult. I just booked away from Wizz due to this new policy for a slightly more expensive and less convenient routing on EasyJet. At least with EasyJet, carry ons are still free, and while they rigidly enforce their size requirements, they don't care about weight.

Totally off the specific subject, but having watched people try to stuff an elephant in an overhead bin on Southwest, I'd like to see a luggage nazi at the door of each Southwest flight.

On our last flight, I was tempted to deck a male flight attendant who grabbed at my legal size carry on and tried to tell me to put it at my feet so those who came later could use the overhead bin.

I pay for Early Bird checkin, doofus; I get to use the overhead bin.

I do sympathize with your complaint, Carolinian. Wizz is too rigorous and SW too lax in enforcement.

It is becoming such a challenge to fly anywhere anymore.
