  • Best city for New Year's Eve?

Can some of you share your opinions on some of the best cities for NY Eve? I should mention, we are in our late 50's and will be married 40 yrs in 10/2007, so looking for dinner, some dancing, and just general atmosphere. Not into the Times Square kind of scene. Our usual NY Eve is dinner with another couple & back to one of the houses, or a small party with 4-6 couples.
We were in Honolulu for 2003, and it was the most memorable NY experience we have had. We had a nice dinner, poolside party with a Latino band at the Sheraton, fabulous fireworks, and then walked back to Hilton on the main street (danged if I can spell or pronounce it) watching all of the revelers. We're looking to go somewhere to see 2008 come in.
    Thanks

Other than NY I would say go to New Orleans. We did that years ago and enjoyed it. Instead of a ball dropping they have a baby new year dropping. The food there is IMO the best of any place around.
If you are going to stay in the city keep away from Times Square. I have never gone to Times Square during that time. It is a mad house.

Funchal, Madeira, a gorgeous sub-tropical island in the Atlantic that is part of Portugal. Amazing fireworks over the harbor, everyone comes out to see them, cruise ships come in to watch them, family-friendly, very festive and quite a spectacle but not the obnoxious drunken kind, timeshares and hotels have dinner/ fireworks/ champagne packages. The timeshare we stayed at offered a free after-fireworks buffet. You can google to read more about it and find some online video of these fireworks.

Berlin has a great New Years eve party, and it is even amazing how many people come out to the Tiergarten the night BEFORE New Years Eve! It certainly beats Paris, where I have also done New Years Eve.

Sydney Harbour. Spectacular fireworks over the harbour and you can book a restaurant on the harbour or even a dinner cruise and stay and watch the fireworks afterwards. They always have a 9pm and midnight show so that families don't have to stay up to midnight to enjoy the lights.
