  • International Driver's Licence Requirements for Florida

I just read today, in the Toronto Star, that the state of Florida is now requiring Canadians, and other non-residents of the U.S., to have an International driver's licence when driving in Florida. Apparently this bill was passed in early January, but no one has heard of it. The only place we Canadians can obtiain one is CAA, the Canadian counterpart to AAA. They were not informed until 5:30 yesterday.

This is going to be a huge problem for us Snowbirds, who are already wintering in Florida. By the time we get an application, mail it back to Canada and wait for it to arrive back in Florida, we'll probably be back in Canada! Yikes, what a mess!

How strange that 1. they are doing this and 2. they are implementing it so quickly.

As I posted the other day, I don't believe anyone is left in Canada.

Whatever requirement is required has not stopped any Canucks that I can tell.

      Update . . . it's not required:

Update: Apparently, Florida was unaware that English is spoken in Canada. So, don't run out to CAA just yet.

The strange thing is, that the CAA, the only issuers of IDL's, knew nothing about it until last evening. Now the Florida Highway Patrol is saying that they won't enforce this new law yet. Hopefully it is rescinded when the powers-that-be meet in March.

Florida is known for being on top of things. You know, like elections and stuff like that.

I hope it's not required. We are leaving for Florida on Mar 19 and will be renting a car.

Per today's Tampa Bay Times, the state has now backtracked on this.
