A very naïve question--are these ferries the type that you go on with your car, or will we be on foot when we get to the other side?

For a day trip, you would be on foot. There are buses on the island, I think. Moving a car on the ferry requires a reservation and is expensive. The ferry company is called the Steamship Authority if you want to have a look. Also at least one of the islands has restrictions on cars...is that Martha's Vineyard?
