I was reading that flying into Newerk and taking the holland tunnel might be a good option. Who knows ? It looks like Friday at 5:30 pm for landing in late Sept.

    Thanks
    Bill

I prefer Newark to JFK, but if you are taking a taxi it will cost more to get in from Newark. LaGuardia is my preferred airport for NYC if it's an option.

All of the flights to get to New York other than EWR put me in New York pretty late, like after 11 pm when using miles anyway. I could leave a day early and spend the night at a hotel.

I am reading that the train or bus drops us off near time square so thats a very good option.

I agree with Glitter, LGA IMO is the best airport, In and our fast, Out of JFK you can take the over head tram To Jamaica Station and from there the long island RR to Pen.

I would sooner fly into LGA at midnight than EWR at 5:30 on a Friday, but I'm not familiar with the public transport options into Manhattan. JMHO.

            Thanks.
I think Im stuck with newerk and get in at either 5:30 pm or 11:30 pm using miles. All the other flights using miles are twice as long flight times. According to trip advisor I can catch a train to within a few blocks of the Manhatten Club. So how safe are the trains at night ?

That train should be fine, though I'm not familiar with it. And once you're in Manhattan, you can safely take the subway anywhere you would likely want to go at just about any hour.

I have taken the public transportation from EWR to NY Penn station. You take the AirTrain connector to the train station, two stops and you're at Penn station in New York. I never took it at midnight, but it was a mix of a few sketchy passengers (talking to themselves type) and commuters on my daytime trips.

One note, the first stop is "Newark" Penn station (don't get off) - you want "New York" Penn station. Confusing, I know.

Also, I'd pack light - not an easy on and off with lots of luggage.

At 11:30, it's probably easier to take the Newark airport bus to the Port Authority at 42nd and Eighth Avenue. Then you just walk out to the Eighth Avenue side to get a cab for the quick ride to the Manhattan Club.

But I wouldn't take the bus at 5:30. The traffic will make it take forever. Anywhere around rush hour, take the train.

The train from Newark Airport goes to New York Penn Station, at 34th and Eighth. Then you can take a cab or the subway to get to 57th Street. So it's the subway that's within a few blocks of the Manhattan Club--it's not a direct train from Newark Airport.

I have taken the bus in from Newark. I can't remember what time of day it was, but the ride wasn't that bad. I can't remember why I didn't take the train, but it may have had to do with cost, scheduling or destination, or all of them. I have never had problems riding the subway in Manhattan, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. As others have said, LaGuardia is probably the best option, but depending on time of day, traffic is a problem there too. The trip between LaGuardia and Manhattan can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour. I actually made the trip once from lower Manhattan to the airport in 15 minutes. I would not want to ride with that driver again, however.

One thing to consider is the number of passengers. At some point it is cheaper to take a taxi from the airport.

It looks like if you take the airport bus from Newark, you can get the E train to within 3 blocks of the Manhattan Club, but with luggage, you might just want to take a taxi from the Port Authority bus terminal.

I think were going on thursday instead of friday. This way we don't have to get up early as the flight leaves around 11:30 am and even though we get to newerk late a shuttle will take us to the hotel. I found a room at the Hilton and because of Franks fat wallet dealio we racked up reward points at sears and booked it for $120 total through sears vacations.

Sears also sent us some coupons and one of them is for a $4.95 oil change.

Then we can sleep until we want to get up and head to the manhatten club.

Frank, I cant go fishing on this trip, darn it. Unless its something like blue fin tuna in which case my wifes on her own. This trip is my wifes dealio and she wants to see some crap and visit some shirt tail relatives. One dude on the list is Mario who she is not really related to in any way except that he is my wifes sisters husbands first cousin and we like him.

                          Thanks for all the info.

One more idea. You can take the Super Shuttle from Newark, and it will take you right to your hotel. That's 1-800-BLUEVAN.

If that gets you an extra full day in NYC, it's definitely a good option.
