  • Our upcoming trip to NY

We are staying at the Hilton Club for six nights checking in on June 14 and have been looking for advice on the best way to get from Newark airport to the hotel. Someone O/Y suggested taking the express bus to Bryant Park and then a taxi to the Hilton. We will have luggage so want to make sure this is doable. Another option is the train but this might require dragging bags further and I understand that it is not that easy getting them on and off the trains. Don't want to spend money on a taxi if one of these options would work. I know there are a lot of people here that live in the NY area so any advice would be appreciated and I know I will have some other questions. Thanks.

    Hi Lynn,
Saw that thread….my DD often takes the train from Newark to NYC with luggage - I will ask her specifically about the stairs.

Express Bus to Brynt Park also sounds good as long as they allow luggage storage under the bus…with either option, it is a short cab ride to 53 and 6th Ave. This would be the option I would use - we just did this in Sydney and Melbourne…so convenient.

You will love the Hilton Club - great lounge with breakfast and evening beer/wine/appies served.
Just so you know, you go directly to the 37th floor lounge to check in - you do not check in where the hotel guest go.

And what did you decide about the car rental?

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

        Hi Pat

Lyman is working on it today, We have decided to take the train to Stamford and pick up a car there. It is $300 cheaper to do that and drop it at JFK

I would use the Super Shuttle, which will take you right to the door of your hotel for slightly more. 1-800-BLUE VAN.

AirTrain service is suspended till July 1, replaced by buses: http://www.panynj.gov/airports/ewr-a...uspension.html

Here's the ground transportation page from the Newark website: http://www.panynj.gov/airports/ewr-t...n-service.html

And the Super Shuttle page: http://www.supershuttle.com/

Supershuttle is actually a great idea.
It could take a little longer because of multiple drop offs but then who cares, it is door to door for probably the same cost.

            Also SS has Internet coupons….

            Just checked, it would be…
            From The Airport

            Shared Ride Van Service
            First Passenger :$21.00
            Each Additional Passenger :$21.00
            Fuel Surcharge : $0.00
            Max Passengers :11

SuperShuttle goes to Long Island? So deeply envious, it doesn't go to NJ.

It goes from LGA and JFK to Long Island…but I live much too far away to use it.
The one time we did use it we left our car at DHs office….for us to park for 2 weeks at LongTerm Parking at JFK/LGA is close to $300…but now we do have a cheaper private company with good service so have started using that option again….my favorite way is the LIRR to Jamaica and then take the AirTrain right to your terminal.

Does anyone know why SuperShuttle gets such bad reviews on Trip Advisor? I was reading about people not being picked up and waiting for 2 hours for it to come.

I have used it twice this past year and will use it again in June.
                    Did not have a problem

Would not worry as u are getting it at airport.....you just go to there booth/area/ and see the rep....they will then put you on the shuttle going to your area.
If you are concerned, you could always do the bus taxi route instead.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Maybe we would be okay using the SuperShuttle as it seems no one here has had a problem. I was just concerned after reading the Trip Advisor reviews.

We have already done all the touristy things on our last trip so this time we just want to explore the city. Want to do Brooklyn for sure. Where would the best place to have reasonable priced pizza or Italian? We want to stay and have dinner there.

I only used Super Shuttle in NYC once, out of LGA. It was fine, but I was stupid and was trying to go somewhere off the main midtown grid, way up on the west side. I thought they would take me there FIRST, but I thought wrong! I was absolutely last, the van was full, it took forever. I should have just hopped off in midtown, but I got stubborn and wanted to see how long they would drag me around. But that was me being a jerk, not them.

Weirdly, my sister has a thing against them because she got on her SuperShuttle once and the van left her terminal and then went around to all the terminals again before setting off for the city (not sure where this was, might have been San Francisco). I was like, why is that a problem? She felt that once they had loaded at each terminal, that should be it. No amount of discussion has ever persuaded her that it was okay for the van to go around twice.

You want the Italian to be in Brooklyn, you mean? Frank will be by in just a moment with an opinion. We have many friends in Brooklyn, but I barely know my way around. I can ask them if you need recommendations after Frank weighs in.

The Italian doesn't have to be in Brooklyn but thought if we were going there anyway it would be nice to have dinner somewhere. We also want to go to Little Italy, Greenwich Village, Chinatown and see more of Central Park than we did last time because we ran out of time (and energy)! I know it's hard to eat Chinese with just two people but we may try.

I'd have Italian in Little Italy and Polish in Brooklyn. I like Christina's on Manhattan Ave. in the Greenpoint area. Excellent kielbasa. People on Yelp rave about their Hungarian Pancake. The white borscht, on days it's available, is crazy good.
