My favorite is Hawaiian Airline with Virgin America second. We used to fly a lot on Alaska, especially when we were temporarily living in Spokane WA. We earned several free tickets and almost always were able to upgrade to first class for $50-100 depending on distance.

We don't fly them anymore because they don't fly from Southern California to Honolulu nor New York City. The last time we flew Alaska was from San Diego to Cancun but we don't travel to Mexico anymore.

I'm having a bit of difficulty accepting that Garuda Indonesia is now in the top ten. It was the airline of choice for teenagers on a budget in the 1970's/80's, my mother would beg me not to fly with them and cry at the airport. Friends gave me cards wishing Good Luck rather Bon Voyage.

Notice all of them are Asia/Middle East airlines except one (Lufthansa)...perhaps this reflects the population in these regions since this was voted by travelers?

We have easy access to the Asia/Middle East airlines and they really are exceptional and win places each year. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I deserted my Australian (Qantas) and British Airways airlines over 15 years ago because they are both terrible imo.

The Skytrax awards are based on a survey of 18.85 million airline passengers from around the world. Passengers from more than 160 countries participated in the latest survey, which covered 245 airlines worldwide.

The awards are not without controversy. Last month, Etihad Airways announced it would withdraw from the awards, citing unhappiness with Skytrax's rating system.
However, the airline still ranked 9th in this year's results, after Skytrax declared that an airline could not withdraw from the rankings as the results were decided by customers.
"An airline cannot be withdrawn from the World Airline Awards, since these results are directly decided by customers. Skytrax do not exercise control over which airlines are nominated in the survey ratings, and to subsequently try and conceal the results of a public vote would be unacceptable," Skytrax said in a statement.

Qantas came 11th apparently but did well in the regional awards. Emirates placed first last year.

Qantas meanwhile, dropped back to 11th place from 10th last year. This is the second time Qantas has fallen outside the top 10, falling back to 15th place in 2012. The airline peaked in 2008, when it was ranked the 3rd best in the world.
There was better news for Qantas in the awards by region, where it was named the best airline in the Australia/Pacific category, ahead of Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand and Jetstar.
Virgin Australia came 15th in the overall rankings, with Air New Zealand in 16th place.

I don't know anything about American airlines. The airlines are assessed according to regions - North America, South America, Africa, Europe etc etc. then, I guess, the results are ranked to create a worldwide result.

Malaysian Airlines have been in the top 20 for the last 5 years at least but I doubt they will survive this latest disaster. After a plane went missing in March, they lost a quarter of their business. In 2012 our Qantas was going to do a tie-up with Malaysian MAS but instead chose a partnership with the Dubai-based Emirates. I have always found Malaysian Airlines to be exceptionally good and feel very sorry for my neighbours troubles.
