  • What's the latest in New York City?

My wife and I are traveling to NYC next week.

I've been at least a dozen times but she is a first timer.

I know how the subway system works and how to get around.

Are they any must-see shows or things to do this time of year? She's 45 and Italian. ;-)

The best musicals that come to mind are Kinky Boots and Pippin.

I'm not sure what the weather will be like next week, but a trip to the Central Park Boathouse is always nice for first-timers. There are also some great views from upstairs in the Time Warner Center, or at the restaurant/lounge upstairs in the Museum of Design, also in Columbus Circle (prepare to spend $16 on a glass of wine, there, though, just go for one drink and the view).

The Water Taxi is also great if it's warm enough.

Walk around the West Village. Walk around the East Village. Walk around the Lower East Side. There are good walking tours of the LES, too, and a visit to the Tenement Museum is supposed to be great.

If you like art, at all, spend an afternoon checking out the gallery district in Chelsea.

Lincoln Center has been recently redone and it's beautiful at night. Or, during the day there's a faux lawn in the back that's fun for a picnic, or just to sit for a few mins. Or just see.

Google "Manhattan Rooftop bars" and pick one.

    Go to the Botanical Garden.

    I'll keep thinking.

We have received so many recommendations from people.

I told my wife, "they're all great and it's impossible to see them all."

We get in Tuesday night and leave Sunday morning. There are only so many hours in a day.

I strongly recommend taking the Grayline hop on hop off bus tours.

        http://www.grayline.com/tours/new-yo...-hours-5870_5/

There are 4 tours, uptown, downtown, Brooklyn, and night tour. We did all 4. It cost only $10 more to do all 4. It is really neat as you can get off to see something that interests you and then get back on another bus. I see that they still have the deal for all 4 tours at just $10 more. It is at the bottom of their web page.

There is so much to see and enjoy it is impossible to list it all. We also did a boat tour that was very good. We went to NYC in 2008, 2010, and 2011. We haven't been able to go the last couple years because of health issues but that should be taken care of this year so hopefully we can go next year. We would like to go every summer.

Listen to Glitter Brunello and JWC and you can't go wrong.

Do you like Jazz? I do and Glitter recommended "Jazz at Lincoln Center" to me and I went late at night after two other shows that evening. It was fantastic. I bought 3 CDs and had them autographed by the band but they were stolen out of my luggage and I am still pretty upset about it. I also went to the famous "Blue Note" that week because I listened to them on the radio but I preferred the Jazz at Lincoln Center because it wasn't so amplified or loud.

The shows are fabulous in NYC and you can buy tickets at big discount prices. I ended up going to a ballet of the New York City Ballet and the music was all Bach that evening. It was fabulous so can highly recommend the shows.

Listen to Glitter as she seems to know what is going on in NYC and everything is so close together rather than so spread out in LA.

Enjoy your trip and go and see some of these highlights here:

I will add a specific art recommendation: There are inexpensive gallery tours of Chelsea led by a guy who researches all the exhibits ahead of time every month, then takes people on an afternoon walk to the most prominent. It looks like you are just missing the "best of" tour the Saturday before you get here, but if you're interested I can try to pin down a couple of the exhibits for you so you can explore them at your leisure. The Saturday you're here is the monthly LGBT tour, focusing this month on masculinity in art.

I recently went to see Phantom of the Opera again after not seeing it in many years. Still a great show with wonderful music. They have a Thursday 2PM show while few others do.

Also saw Les Mis which was fabulous.

I am also a fan of the HOHO bus. While you can get around easily on the subway, being above ground with a narrative is great.

If time permits, I LOVE the Circle Line Tour https://www.circleline42.com. Either 2.5 or 1.5 hour tour.
Great time of year to be in NYC
