I had never had problems accessing my yahoo email account from anywhere until a few weeks ago in London. I was at Heathrow between flights returning from a trip back to the states, and went to their bank of computers that offer free 20 minute internet access and went to check email. Yahoo flashed up a screen that I was seeking access from an unknown device and asked to confirm who I was by text, telephone, or another email account. The alternative email accounts they offered were ones I had not used in years. The cell phone numbers they wanted me to call or text on were US numbers, on which I could hardly get a signal in London. I had not previously encountered such a thing at yahoo before, and I have signed in to my account from many countries on many computers. This seems to be something new, and it is highly annoying.
Since then, I have tried to access yahoo email at three internet cafes I had not used before in other countries, and twice I got in while reaching the same crap once.
Yahoo says this is to ''protect'' my account, but I regard it as much more of an aggravation.
If there is any threat to my account from using an internet cafe or airport computer, it is mainly one created by yahoo itself. On their sign in page, they have a pre-checked box to keep the user signed in on that computer. It is asinine to precheck that box, as it also comes up that way on these public computers. I have on quite a few occasions gone to yahoo at an internet cafe and someone else's account opened because they had not noted the prechecked box and had not signed out.
If yahoo really wants to protect our accounts, they need to stop pre-checking that box on keeping the user signed in. Then they could ditch their highly aggravating verification policy on devices they are not familiar with a user signing in from previosly.
