I'm wondering if the traffic can get worse than the Long Island Expressway during rush hour. Maybe so because I think they have more lanes. We will have to leave and return later in the day.

Yes, it can.

Because on LI at least there is alternate (public) transportation.

Seriously, it is at least similar, and multiplied by lanes as you mention. The difference for me was that I needed to travel further in SoCal from point A to B than I generally do on LI, so delays were longer.
