I remember when many gas pumps did not have a dollars column on the price per gallon. When I was in high school and my first university years, regular (still with lead) gas sold in North Carolina for 32 cents a gallon. Sometimes you would find a gas war with cheaper prices. I remember one summer driving to the beach through Pageland, South Carolina there was a gas war going on and prices were half of that.

When the Arab Oil Embargo forced prices up, and they went over a dollar, gas stations had to convert their pumps to add a dollars column on the price. Some pumps could not be converted and those stations metered gas by the half gallon to stay under a dollar. One near my campus tried to do it by liters but the market was wary of foreign measurements and that only lasted a few weeks before they went to half gallons, too.
