  • Hit by Turkey coverage

On the first day of our 10 day vacation we were hit by a turkey on our way to Glacier Park after flying into Spokan Airport and getting a rental car. We were going between 65-70 with other cars behind and nowhere to pull off. We rounded a turn and were joking about the deer crossing sign when the turkey rose and bam. It hit the passenger side headlight and broke it,dented the hood in two places then hit but did not break the windshield. We didn't think it did anything until it hit the windshield and didn't see any damage until we stopped at our hotel.
We called the car rental and they said as long as it was drivable and the light still worked to keep the car for the rental period (10 days). We then called our insurance AAA which we have a large deductible.
We did not take rental insurance.
AAA will cover damage above our deductible and told us to check with our credit card company. Got good news yesterday. The credit card company will cover the deductible.

Thanks Nancy. My wife was driving, I was passenger. One of scariest moments ever for us. We originally figured 30lb bird until we saw the damage and now we are thinking 40lbs after seeing the amount of damage.
Have been in a car wreck before but this was actually scarier because it looked as if it was going to go thru windshield.
Car rental, insurance, charge card people had never heard of damage like this from a turkey.

Wow! Frightening indeed, but makes for a great story, now that you are safe.

              Glad everyone was okay.

My dad says they ate pheasant a lot when he was a kid, because they so commonly hit them with the car!

The weight of an adult wild turkey is normally between 5.5-24lbs !

Believe me, it would have been far worse if it were a deer. Or an elk!

We know that almost any animal would of/ could of been much worse. I only posted what happened. The fun now has started with the information each company wants and the fact that some want it sent one way and some another. An example is some only want faxed copies and others ask to email the info.
I think for us the worst part was having to drive the car without it being fixed or traded in for another. The rental car company said as long as the light still worked to hang onto it for the ten days. My question is could we have received a ticket for the light cover being broken or the right turn signal not being seen from in front of us?.
