  • Save on Winter Travel With These Credit Cards [Update! 2017 deals]

    http://www.budgettravel.com/blog/sav...t-cards,55926/

Savvy travelers are booking holiday and winter travel now to lock in good deals. With some of the year’s busiest travel dates coming up around the holidays and winter break, our friends at CardHub have delivered another great report: Best Travel Credit Cards for Winter 2015-16. While lower fuel prices, a strong dollar, and more reasonable airfares are already making this an great time to save money on travel, this new report makes it clear that careful shopping for the right credit card can nab you as much as an extra $625 in savings.

Of course, Budget Travel does not recommend that you charge a vacation you can’t afford. A rule of thumb we’ve always suggested is: If you wouldn’t borrow money for your dream trip from friends or family, don’t borrow it from a credit card company! But, that caveat aside, using a credit card when you travel can be a smart choice: You’ll get the best available exchange rate for foreign currency, you’ll earn reward points for future purchases or trips, and you may be eligible for statement credits that can really add up.

A few of the credit cards that CardHub recommnends for winter travel include:

Citi ThankYou Premier: 50,000 bonus points, redeemable for a $625 travel statement credit, in return for spending $3,000 in the first three months; no annual fee in the first year ($95 thereafter)

Barclaycard Arrival Plus: $400 travel statement credit for spending $3,000 in the first three months and effectively 2.1% cash back on all purchases when earnings are redeemed for travel-related expenses; no annual fee in the first year ($89 thereafter)

IHG Credit Card: 60,000-point initial bonus, redeemable for up to 12 free nights, for spending $1,000 in the first three months; one additional free night each year; complimentary Platinum Elite Status; no annual fee in the first year ($49 thereafter)

Global energy politics have resulted in something of a boon for American households in recent months, with dramatically reduced prices at the pump expected to save the typical family roughly $750 over the course of 2015 and airfare finally starting to reflect reduced jet fuel costs. It therefore figures that the already-frantic fall and winter travel seasons may be even busier than normal this year.

But with that in mind, it’s important to note that one’s ability to save money while seeing friends, family and the world over the holidays isn’t limited to the whims of the oil markets. Another important financial tailwind – historically valuable credit card rewards – have actually grown even more lucrative in the past year, according to CardHub’s latest Credit Card Landscape Report, with sign-up bonuses worth up to $625 and various other perks available to people who have above-average credit standing.

In the interest of helping folks take full advantage of plastic this winter travel season, CardHub compared more than 1,000 credit card offers (some of which originate from CardHub advertising partners) in order to identify the most rewarding travel deals. You can find our best in class selections below, followed by CardHub’s money-saving travel tips.

I have taken advantage of a great Delta card offer -50,000 points for spending $1000 in the first months.
DH cancelled his but I am keeping mine another year, just so we can get the free baggage. We don't use them much, so I am planning on canceling after the year is up.
Do you think they will turn down people with histories of getting the bonus then canceling?

Also, I have the IHG card. The $49 per year fee has gotten me free rooms in San Francisco, New York City and Aruba. Plus they always try to upgrade you if there is one available.

Hey everyone, this looks like a good deal. I'd be interested in getting the IHG card as well, would you recommend then? Or is there a better deal out there. I am planning a long vacation with my husband. We have always wanted to rent a caravan and spend some time in nature, by a beach maybe, so we've been looking at xxxxxxxxxxxxx. But we don't want to spend the whole time in a carvan, we would like to get some of these free rooms in cities that you're all raving about! It's been many years since we have taken a long holiday together, so we want to splash out, but to be honest with you we don't have the money upfront. Do you think we should get one of these credit cards as well? Any help you offer would be much appreciated. I'm new to this forum but wanted to join for advice on things like this! Thanks very much.

There's a whole science to travel credit cards and maximizing the system to gain free or cheap travel.

The main ones I use are United, AA, Marriott and IHG. However, right now, due to Marriott's merger with Starwood, I'm getting good mileage out of my Starwood Amex since the Starwood and Marriott accounts are linked and I can transfer points across accounts seamlessly and the current Starwood->Marriott rate is 1 to 3, so each dollar spent on the Amex gains 3 MRP's. The IHG Platinum card and Marriott Premiere card come with free night certs on each anniversary and both are now good for a year and the IHG is IMO the better deal because its fee is cheaper and the free cert is good across hotel lines into some real nice properties, whereas the Marriott is good only in Cat 1-5.

Like I said, it's a science, actually closer to a cult or religion, but those of us who are deep into it can travel pretty cheap or free.
