Speaking of DW flying to Florida, I dropped her off at the Springfield/Branson airport this afternoon 1 1/2 hours before her flight. I stopped to get some cashew chicken, drove home about 50 miles, opened a few emails, then checked her flight on Flightaware. It's already descending for landing in Florida.

That sure beats a 20-hour drive.

    Normally about $70 each way.

Just received an email from Autoslash on my 2 weeks car rental in Canada and they rebooked the car saving us another $58.33 down to $365 for our trip. Same car with the same rental company.
Autoslash has saved me lots of money on every time I've used them except one time.

Same here, the "except one time" part.

Just in case anyone looking in wants to know, if you have a flat tire with a Hertz rental car, they have an $80 flat tire charge. For that, they send someone out to put the donut on. Then they require that you return the car to where you picked it up, even if it is 100 or 200 miles, and you have to drive on the Interstate with the donut on.

Or, of course, you could just fix it.

Still on the subject of car rental, but off of JLB and Florida, I am looking at prices for Las Vegas for Nov. Prices are very high from my past years experience. However, an off site Hertz rental is showing $50-100 cheaper than the typical airport based rental. Question for me is how do I get to the rental location? These are not the normal bus shuttle to the main off airport car locations. If I have to take a taxi both ways, that drops the cheaper price down a lot. How do these things work, is there transportation to them or am I on my own?

Ask if they will pick you up, like Enterprise, or if there is an airport shuttle to the off-site location.

Post the specifics and maybe someone will play around with it.

Regarding DW's flat tire, I suggested she call the 800# for roadside assistance, which is included with our auto insurance. She did, and one of those FL "Road Warrior" services was there in less than an hour. He repaired the flat . . . better than putting the donut on.

The service is free, as part of our insurance policy, but she gave him twenty bucks.

Last year we switched our auto insurance after getting jacked around by State Farm, which I had been a customer of since 1966. This is the first time we had actually used our Safeco policy. DW had said that she was going to go to Hertz when she picked her GF up at the airport yesterday, and see if they wanted to switch out the car. I don't know if she did. It didn't come up in the conversation this morning.

For the off ones you will be on your own to get there, either taxi/public bus/etc. They often seem like a deal, but as you've experienced the cost to get there and back often makes it a wash.

I have not used it, but that site also says that the "on site" rental cars are at a center 3 miles from the airport, with shuttle buses.

Unless I'm mistaken, vintner was talking about using Hertz. They are one of the ones "listed below".

Enterprise will not pick you up at the airport. They'll pick you up almost anywhere else. shaggy

We di this in Nashville a few years ago. Can't remember which company but we had to take a Taxi. The Taxi got lost and the place had moved a block away from address. It was in a bad place right across the street from a half way house. We got the car and when returning were scheduled to return at 3pm. Turns out rental place closes on Sunday at Noon (never told us this). Luckily I had my first cell phone to call a Taxi. We waited in car until the Taxi came as there were about 20 men sitting/standing outside halfway house. We would have felt very uncomfortable standing, waiting for the Taxi with our luggage. We won't rent off site again.

While true, Hertz was listed with the lowest price off site cars, at this point, I would take anything for the three days: Nov 15-18.

Looking like I may try out my first Uber ride. DW is totally against me doing Uber (they have bad people driving and people get killed or robbed). All I need is Airport to Bluegreen Club 36, then Club 36 to Caesars and back (3X) and then to the airport. Well, maybe a dinner out too. And I would need to rent for $115. Still, it is cheaper than a taxi.

Yes, i was meaning that there would be no off-site Hertz pickup at Space #4, since they have an on-site facility.

From what I was reading, many of the off site companies won't come to the airport because the don't have the agreement with the airport (aka extra fees).
