  • Flying with a REAL ID

    Check for the Star.

Due to circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the national emergency declaration, the Department of Homeland Security is extending the REAL ID enforcement deadline by a year. The new deadline for REAL ID enforcement is October 1, 2021.

Beginning October 1, 2021, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States.

When I last renewed my passport, I also got a passport card, which is also a REAL ID and I can carry in my wallet for domestic travel. Most of my flights are TATL, so I have my passport anyway.

As far as I know, anyone flying within the U.S. who is 18 or older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, an enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID.
When planning trips, having the right ID is really important. If you want to make your flights more comfortable, you should check out business class flights. I know from my own experience that when the customs staff sees a boarding pass from a business class, they ask fewer questions and don't keep you long.
