  • UK has terror alert in all airports...

    plot discovered

Flyertalk discusses new regulations for travellers in UK.

This is already causing major delays at all UK airports with cancellations considered inevitable. NO hand luggage can be taken on board with the exception of prescription medicines, cash and keys. Confusion may be caused for American travellers as the statement says that purses can be taken on board. Purse means different things to US and UK travellers. In the UK a purse is a small 'container' for coins and banknotes. What the US traveller refers to as a purse is called a handbag in the UK. This will have to go into checked luggage.

They are now banning liquids and gels in all carry-on bags in the US. Other new restrictions are going into effect.

Anyone traveling should contact their carrier for the new restrictions.

There will be longer delays, and people should adjust their travel plans accordingly......So says the latest report!!!

Thank God for the excellent British counter-intelligence. Looks like M7 (or whatever the correct name is) foiled a huge plot.
Glad I got my trip in last May.

TSA is immediately implementing following changes to airport screening procedures:

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.
Exception: Baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger’s ticket; and insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines

Beverages purchased in the sterile area must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.

I sincerely hope they have got their intelligence right this time. They have a thankless task, but they have managed to cover themselves in things other than glory lately

Certainly better to be safe than sorry, but there will be a degree of doubt and cynicism over here until we know a lot more about what has actually been happening in the last 24 hours.

I have just been looking into this since our nyc/lax/hnl flight is scheduled to leave JFK at 8 am. So much for my great idea to pack in carry-ons only!! I think we are still going to try it, just leaving all the sunscreen, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. home. Will have to go buy them in the morning in Waikoloa village I guess. I hate to put that stuff in my checked luggage anyway, it always explodes. We are going to arrive at the airport 2 hours early, I hope that's enough time (website says 1 hour for domestic w/no checked bags so I am doubling that). AA is even offering full refunds or free reticketing for any flights through 9/1... I was stressed out enough yesterday...

ETA: I wonder what they would consider 'essential non-prescription medicine...?' In the meantime, DH just ran out to get a label with DS' name put on the prescription cream/lotion we need to put on his healing burns leftover from the Alpine Slide...

Last night my DH had found the flight he wanted to take for London in about a month and had seen what the rates were for Alamo too. He hadn't reserved yet because he needed to talk to family in England and now he isn't going until this is all over.

I wonder how this will hurt the travel industry? We are living in uncertain times because of a small percentage of very evil people. Most people are good people. How awful that we all have to suffer for a few.

The problem he will have is that it's never likely to be "all over", at least not in our lifetime. Can we really go through life fearing to travel in case something happens. This could just as easily have happened on a domestic flight in the US or any other country.
The US and UK are certainly higher profile targets because of Iraq, but the scum behind this attempt want to wipe out 'non-believers' the world over.

I read the TSA notice at the link given in this thread. It says in part, "Passengers should pack their patience and ensure that that they do not bring any liquids to the security checkpoint in carry-on luggage. These items are no longer permitted on board the aircraft." That sounds like people aren't allowed to bring their patience aboard! (I know that wasn't what they meant.)

As for what non-prescription medicines are allowed, I would not be surprised if it is insulin only. Insulin, for some reason, doesn't require a prescription -- probably because it was available before the prescription system was set up, and was "grandfathered." There may be a few other injectible drugs in the same situation; I'm not sure if injectible epinephrine (adrenalin) requires a prescription.

It's not clear whether the "no liquids" rule will be permament, but if it is, that will really put a damper on my travel plans. I have very sensitive skin and find it almost impossible to buy the toiletries I need when I arrive; I often mail-order toiletries from natural food stores. Even packing my toiletries in my checked luggage, with the danger of losing them, would really bother me. Also, like many people I find that I need to re-apply various moisturizers on long flights to keep my skin from drying out and cracking. One of the news stories I read included a quote from a man who had just been treated for skin cancer and wasn't allowed to keep the skin creams he needed to keep his skin from swelling and cracking.

Apparently, the terror plot that was foiled involved putting various reactive substances into different toiletry or beverage containers. The plan was to go into the plane restroom while the plane was in flight, and combine the different substances into one explosive mixture. The mixture would then be detonated with the charge from a battery. Terrorists hoped to pull off these attacks on multiple planes simultaneously.

Some security experts are saying that all items with batteries should be banned from hand luggage -- not only laptops, cameras, and cell phones, but also electronic key fobs such as the ones that come with many new cars. Imagine flying home from a trip, and finding that your car keys, cell phone, and maybe your house keys were lost with your checked baggage! And, given how fragile laptops are, I'm not sure how they could be brought on trips at all, if they can't be carried on.

I really think we will have to move to a "trusted passenger" system, where people will submit to background checks before flying, and then be identified biometrically at the airport. Otherwise, flying will just become untenable. I suspect any trusted passenger system will involve ethnic profiling in some form -- for example, maybe people who have spent much time in certain countries such as Afghanistan or Pakistan wouldn't qualify. I know that goes against the egalitarian ideals of western countries, but I don't see a way around it.

Avery, bottles leak in flight because when the airplane flies at high altitudes, the air pressure in the hold is very low. (Passenger cabins are pressurized, but baggage holds generally are not.) This causes the air in the bottle to greatly expand, forcing the cap open to let the air (and liquid contents) out. Have you tried squeezing all the air out of the bottles before you pack them? Even if you can't get all the air out, at least the remaining air has some room to expand. Tape placed around the bottom of the cap also helps.

I like to bring wine home from France, Moldova, and other places in Europe, and rum from the Caribbean. I dread having those items at the tender mercies of the luggage throwers / baggage mishandlers of the airlines. I also like to avoid checked luggage altogether. This is a major bummer.

Maybe Jacques Chirac got one thing right on deterance. A few months ago, he gave a speech standing in front of a docked ''boomer'' (nuclear missile submarine) in which he said France would punish the sponsoring country for any terrorism committed against France and no weapon would be off of the table in inflicting that punishment. I know that seems strange coming from somone like Chirac, but no France - US flights seem to have been targeted.
