Airline restrictions and ice packs

I know there is a ban on liquids and I've read something about liquid ice packs. Anyone know about the 24 hour ice packs?

Are people still taking coolers on the plane or packing them in luggage?

That, however, is not my real problem. My Mom takes medication which must be refrigerated so we always carry on a mini-cooler bag with a freezer pack and I am concerned about that. They are prefilled injectibles and putting them in luggage with pressure changes may not be a good idea.

If anyone has the specifics on the current restrictions, I'd appreciate the info.

As far as checked luggage, I can tell you my experience from yesterday. Inside a duffle bag, I packed a cooler with a juice bottle of frozen water and containers of sour cream, chili and potato salad. There was also a frozen family size entree. I cleaned out the refrigerator and thought I'd take my chances. Nothing was said at all. Nor was my bag lost, which was my other concern.

You should be able to carry the ice pack and medication onboard with your mom.

see this TSA link. The pertinent language:

We are continuing to permit prescription liquid medications and other liquids needed by persons with disabilities and medical conditions. This includes:

. . . .

Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions.

You would be wise to take the medication in the original package that includes your mom's name and that contains the instruction that shows it must be refrigerated.

I already thanked you on Tug- but I'll thank you here too . I had seen that page on the TSA website but had carelessly just skimmed it.

Good idea to take the medication instruction sheet along in case there are any questions.
