All U.S. citizens traveling to the Caribbean, Canada, and Mexico will be required to show a passport, not just a birth certificate, in order to re-enter the United States. The following shows the schedule of changes to the current requirements: *
· December 31, 2006 – Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
· December 31, 2007 – Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
* The requirement will not apply to territories of the U.S., including Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa.
* The requirement is in effect for re-entry to the U.S. even if the host country does not enforce it.
