  • Bad Spirit Air Experience

We flew from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman yesterday on Spirit Air. This was our first flight on Spirit. Our electronic reservation said to arrive 2 hours ahead of time. We were in line at 10:00 A.M. for a 12:00 P.M. flight. The line extended out of Terminal 4 to Terminal 3. We reached the ticket counter at 12:00 P.M. I realize it was a big travel day, but there did not appear to be anyone from Spirit trying to keep things organized. People were cutting in line at the terminal entrance, as cruise ship buses kept dropping off passengers there.

There did not appear to be any sense of urgency checking in passengers. The counter agent put someone else's baggage tag on my wife's bag. If I had not caught it, my wife's bag would have gone to Atlantic City. As it was, our bags did not make the flight. Part of that problem was the result of TSA slowness in scanning luggage. After we got checked in at the counter, we had to take our bags to the TSA scanner. There was a huge pile of bags, and the man running the scanner was leisurely putting them on the conveyor.

After dropping off our checked bags, we then had to run over to Terminal 3 and go through security. We were one of the last ones on the plane, which took off about an hour late. I had to ask a flight attendant for customs forms, because they had apparently handed them out to passengers before the door was closed and all passengers loaded. They brought them to me about 10 minutes before we landed. At least we made it. However, we are still awaiting our luggage, which hopefully will arrive and be delivered today.

I'm mildly afraid of flying. So this one doesn't really come under the heading of "bad" for me...just annoying! Phew. Enjoy the sun and the water and have a great time. Hope things go more smoothly coming home!

We drove out to the airport around 3:30 P.M. The bags were there and had not been loaded on a vehicle for delivery. We were able to retrieve them. The weather has been great the last couple of days, so everything is good now. I hope our experience is better going home.

How'd you get from Vienna to FLL?
I've flown Spirit a few times w/o problems. Two years ago I booked my S-I-L on Spirit to meet us in St Maarten to meet us on Boxing Day. Spirit doesn't fly to SXM but got them to SJU for a puddle jumper. Saved a couple hundred x5 doing it that way.

This year we did USAir to STT, isn't that who you usually fly to GCM? Anyway, when I checked in at DCA ticket counter yesterday and they told me that my flight to CLT was overbooked by 8. Got to the gate and volunteered 4 pax going DCA-CLT-STT. GA was a little astounded... she guaranteed two on same itinerary 2 hours later. So two of us volunteered. Turns out only the two were bumped.

Worked out well. By the time I waited for baggage then waited for rental car, packed the car with baggage in STT, I had only 15-20 minutes to wait for wife and daughter's arrival, and off we went.

Here's a question... wife got two Transportation Vouchers, it's been a while since I've had/seen one. Wife believes GA insinuated they could be used for another trip to the islands...

              Voucher says:
Avail seats limited for this class of service
Valid for exchange on US Airways only Valid for travel in region ___________
or a discount off any US airways ticket systemwide in the amount of _________ USD
              etc., etc.

What am I to do? What goes in the blanks?
What are the 'regions'? CONUS/Canada, Europe, Hawaii/AK????
What are the typical or extreme amounts found in the USD blank?
Anyone know what I should 'fill in?'

Region Two and 600.00....that's what I'd fill in, if mostly honest

Region Three if you're an opportunist

Sounds like the holiday rush to me. I left Salt Lake City for Boston on Thursday. Normally takes 15 minutes to get through check-in and security. On Thursday, it took me over 1 1/2 hours and even then they hadn't given me a seat assignment. Finally got on the flight and went home!

You are correct, we usually take the USAir flight from DC. It's kind of a long story. I deposited a Barony Beach week back in May with II. It never showed up in my account, so in October, I e-mailed them. Next thing I know, I find my Seven Mile Beach week 51 deposited. We never deposit this week.

This was about the time I was going to make my GCM reservations. II said they would try to get my week back, which had been picked up by someone. I told them that I either wanted it back or another warm weather destination. About a week and a half later, they called to tell me it had been restored into my account. By then, the airfares had shot up. I kept checking fares, but they didn't come back down. My wife's sister lives north of West Palm. I found a United code share (USAir) flight to FFL on Friday the 22nd, that coupled with the Spirit flight on Saturday saved us a couple of hundred dollars per ticket. We spent Friday night with Mary's sister. Hope the return goes smoothly.

As for those vouchers, sounds like they forgot to fill them in. How is St. Thomas this year? Weather is great in Grand Cayman today. I went diving at Sunset House this morning. However, a cold front is supposed to pass through tonight.

Pat, thanks for the link... I think either one blank or the other gets filled in, not both.

Beautiful, in the 80s and sunny. May go diving at Coki Beach if #2son gets qualified this week. Just back from a free tour of the island hosted by the VI Taxi Assn, pictures are supposed to be at www.virginislandsdailynews.com

Pat, doesn't look like there's really a choice, from your link, anyone ever seen region two or three filled in on a domestic bump??
