  • Transient Tax

OY a poster brought up the $10/night tax that is charged at a certain resort.

Which got me thinking < a dangerous thing >. I clearly remember paying Transient Accomodation &/or Occupation Tax in Hawaii as well as California. I did not pay that tax in Arizona, Maryland or New Jersey this year.

Pretty sure I paid a guest tax of $25 in St Maarten.

Which other states and countries charge a TOT?

This information would come in handy in our resort directory as they are additional costs on top of exchange fees.

Is that the tax RCI is charging on their Last Calls and Extra Vacations?

This tax is usually done locally and is being done more and more. There have been many discussions about it on the Worldmark Board a few years ago. It is just another way for counties to take in extra money without most people complaining because most people don't own timeshares. Cities and counties vote this in constantly lately so it would be very hard to keep a list.

It would be great to have some info, a heads-up on taxes or surcharges....and the amounts often change constantly in some places, (like Caribbean), as gov't loves to use the tourist as the easy pick for revenue...perhaps it would be good to have a spot in the review area for such info, since it would be something that can vary depending on unit size and time of year in some cases (as in a/c surcharges)....if a person stays at a place and does a review, they would have up-to-date info, just a thought.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

We were going to exchange into Lake Tahoe Resort, but the mandatory $7 per day valet parking fee (plus tips to the valet for pickup and drop-off), really put me off. I don't want to add up to $100 to the cost of my vacation just for parking!

I don't know if Florida timeshares charge a transient tax , but when we rented a house here for 3 months in 2001, we were charged a transient tax. But when we moved here and rented with a one year lease, we did NOT pay the tax. I was told that the transient tax here is for any rental less than 6 months.

I know that in Maui everyone pays this tax today. If you own a timeshare there and pay the property tax, they will still charge you the TOT too even if you occupy your own unit. This may not be true yet for all islands but it will come. JMHO. There are many posts about it on TUG.

We own a little timeshare in Laguna Beach where they charge a similar tax to anyone who doesn't own there but I'll bet that CA will follow HI and will start charging everyone too. This is the way it goes with taxes and you all know why.

Two resorts in Hawaii I know of charge the following TOT:

FF/Wyndham Hawaii at Waikiki Beach $25 per night
FF/Wyndham Hawaii at Kona Hawaiian Resort $10-$25 per week

The RCI web site should list these fees in the notes to the resort and on the second page of an RCI exchange confirmation.
