  • Need Hana(Maui) Info Please

I have reservations this October at Kahana Falls for a week and have never been to Maui before. After our week, I would like to make reservations at a reasonably priced Hana inn, a memorable place for my wife and I to enjoy our 30th anniversary. We don't do windy roads too well, so I figured 2-3 nights in Hana to explore before returning to the airport to wrap up our 2 week trip to Hawaii(first week in Kona). After driving, we enjoy just relaxing and enjoying the sights. Can anyone suggest a nice place with an ocean view? Any particular sights to be sure to see? I understand eating places are few, but any suggestions? Are 3 nights too much versus 2? I just bought the road to Hana CD to bring with us. Thanks! Gary

I would spend at least two nights in Hana, but three would be heaven, imho. For a big anniversary, if your budget allows, check out the Hotel Hana Maui. There are more affordable cottages in the area, but be sure to use the Hotel as a 'base' for at least one or two of your evenings, there's nothing else around. The restaurant is pricey, the bar downstairs is still expensive but a little better, and they often have entertainment.

If Leokane Pryor is playing anytime in your window, I can't recommend his show highly enough. My DH is a musician, and a snob at that, and he loved Leokane's combination of unique falsetto, great musicianship, and affable, friendly stage presence.

If the Hotel is too dear, do a google search on Hana Cottages. Don't skimp, there are some dumps around. We stayed at the Hana Kai Maui (www.hanakaimaui.com), they were rustic, but romantic too, and they had full kitchens (bring groceries from West Maui, supplies are limited in Hana). If you stay there, pay for the waterfront units, the view of the water on the black beach is beautiful. But no tv, no phone, no a/c, nothing fancy.. but a great lanai (we loved it and had a great time, but we hung out at Hana Maui )

eta: there are other cottages and b&b's in the area that were sold out by the time I tried to book. We went in summer, things booked up months in advance. Also be sure to leave West Maui with a full tank of gas, and fill up at the only Hana station when you get there if they aren't sold out. If they are, go back in the morning and fill up

gary, we are staying 3 nights in March in Hana.
The place we selected is a cottage you can check out at hanasheaven.com
I found it on vrbo.com The owner has been just wonderful to work with. Will let you know after our stay if it's as wonderful as I believe it is going to be.

      Happy planning!

I just noticed you asked about food. You are right, there is little available in the area. And the only food store closes early (maybe 6 pm, I can't remember), so either bring groceries in a cooler, or plan to get to Hana early.

The Hotel Hana Maui is very odd about the restaurant... they really want you to make reservations. We were treated with something short of Aloha when we showed up in jeans without a reservation on a Monday night (it was the only place open). Even though the dining room upstairs was empty, they hesitated and fumbled before finally suggesting we eat in the bar downstairs...
(turned out GREAT, since that's where Leokane was playing...)

Be sure to get Maui Revealed and study the section on Hana (and the road to Hana, and past Hana)

Recently a friend drove to Hana, started late morning(teenagers), drove back at night,--EXCITING.
