Last year when it started to head up we purchased locking gas caps. With the lack of pubic transportation and the fact everything is spread out far enough that people can't easily walk where they need to, I figured instances of gas ciphoning were going to go up. Apparently drive offs shot up as very few gas sations (if any) will let you pump gas without prepaying for it first.
Well, then the price floated back down and I thought maybe I was wrong. I guess all the PR about oil companies making record profits hasn't slowed them down from picking our pocket even further. At least so long as there's an oil state president sitting in the white house I fiugre the prices are going to stay up there. While it won't hurt us that much I'm sure that it's going to be a killer for lower income families.
I know it's really affecting our son as the job he's working on now is a 40 to 50 mile drive one way and he's only making around $9/hr as a first year electrician. Things will improve for him as he gains experience and passes his journyman's test but, it still hurts now. I can't imagine how baddly it's hurting anyone trying to live on less than $30,000 per year ($14.42/hr and 40 hr weeks). Especially if they're trying to raise a family on that. Our timeshare and other photo's at http://dougp26364.smugmug.com/

$2.43 here in eastern North Carolina.
I have always wondered whether Iran really wants nuclear weapons or if they have just figured out that by periodically playing that card they can keep the price of oil, which they sell a lot of, high.
Of course, I also thought it was foolish for Bush to make a big deal of buying a lot of oil on the market to fill the strategic reserve in his State of the Union speech. Actually filling the reserve is not a bad idea, but making a big deal about it in public was certain to raise oil prices, and it did. Before the State of the Union, gas here was $1.99, and the very next day it started up.

You beat me to the calculation Sue. Our cousins from over the pond are in for one hell of a shock when they hit our shores this year. $2 to the £ AND fuel costs more than double what they are used to. The only consolation being that I suspect most cars in the UK are considerably more fuel efficient than those in the US.
