  • Marriot Rewards Points Needed

Does anyone have any spare rewards points (Not TS, just Hotel rewards points) sitting around that they might be willing to sell me cheap? I need 5,330.

I really want to rent a room locally this weekend in order to let the kids swim. To buy them from Marriott is almost as much as the room itself. And DH does not want to spend much just to let them swim.

    Thanks,
    Tanya

Is there a cost involved in transferring points? If not, I would lend you the points if you would be able to repay them at some point within a year or so. I'm heading out, but will be back late tonight.

Of course, after I looked a little further, I see a snag with my plan. It says in the fine print that the transfer can only be to a spouse. I am calling now to see if there is a way around this.

      Edited to add:
Ok, I called, the lady said that we do not have to be married. The way it works is after I make the reservation, they would send a form by fax that would need to be signed by both and have both numbers filled in. They would fax it to me, then fax it to the other person. There is no cost and it has to be done in multples of thousands.

It can only be done after the reservation is made, so to transfer them back would be the same. I will have them to transfer back to you, so if you would be willing and able to do it, that would work.

        Glitter,

I sooo appreciate your offer. I was all ready to take you up on it when my Hubby told me about his Friend that works there. Apparently, we can get her very cheap rate, so all is taken care of after all.

        Thanks again,
        Tanya

For future use, if a top-off is needed...

Not as good a value as the recent free-for-all penny a point deal, but still not bad...

Thanks Pat, I did see that. It would have cost $75 to buy the 6k I need, the reservation on it's own was only $79. Not exactly cost effective in this case.

What I did find interesting is that to go to the same hotels (Fairfield or Courtyard), 10 minutes down the road would have been 5K less for rewards. We could go for 10k instead of 15k, but my Hubby doesn't like to go to that city, cuz it's too busy. There is a large mall and many restaraunts, etc. So a lot of traffic.

Also saw that I could get a Marriott rewards credit card. That would give me a cert for 1 night's stay, plus 15k the first time I use it. Unfortunately, I opened a chase card a couple of weeks ago to get an incentive, so I cannot get the Marriott card right now. Of course, I forgot all about that other card and applied for this one. Hate to be denied for a silly reason and have it on my credit report, but what ya gonna do?

Yup, definitely not worthwhile on a minor hotel reservation, but worth considering on something like rounding out a travel package or a 7 night stay somewhere...

BTW, I have 5 different affinity cards with Chase and have gotten incentives on all of them. I have two UA cards, two Marriott cards and one Priority Club card. Applied for and recieved them all, with an aggregate credit line of over 100K, in the last 18 months, and FICO dropped about 12 points during that time. The cool thing about Chase is that, once you have a card with them, they don't do hard inquiries on other apps. My point hit came from utilization ratios (had some big bills related to my mom's care)...

Don't be afraid to apply for (and cancel, if necessary) credit cards. It's OK . Just be sure, if cancelling, to roll the line into another card with that issuer, to preserve utilization ratios.

just remember it's better to keep cards that you've had for a long time ( long trade lines) and if you have to cancel, then cancel the newer cards and if you have multiple cards with balances , lowering the balance in 2 or3 positively affects your credit score than than paying off completely the biggest balance - advice of a loan evaluator to me.

I know I can get multiple cards from the same Chase, I have 2. But I think the problem is that I got one less than 30 days ago. Unless the overly expanded credit limits they gave me already put me past their limit. But if they didn't do a hard app because I already have 2 cards with them, will that actually affect my credit rating?

It always surprises me what kind of limits they give. If we actually came close to the max on any of these cards, we would be in big trouble! I only have one that I use very infrequently, unfortunately, it has a balance on it. I would like that gone, but it will probably take me a year to get it to zero again. At least the interest rate is not 18%.

I wonder if my husband would qualify for the card since I did not put his name or soc on the apps? I might wait and try it closer to Nov when we need a couple nights near Disney. I usually don't do anything just for the incentives with my husband's name. I have found that it has preserved his credit rate perfectly. Mine is very, very good, but his is excellent.

Thanks for the advice about the cancellations of the cards. I was actually going to get rid of a couple, and I was not thinking at all of which to keep.

Yes, and, also, since the newer cards tend to be the ones with vanities which are transitory, and the old ones generally carry few incentives but generally have no fees and lower interest rates, it usually works out that way anyway.

I reviewed loan applications for about a decade and mostly looked at utilization trends, as well as the obvious derogs. Number of recently opened accounts/inquiries was a factor but a minor one per our policies.

Just be sure, if contemplating cancelling a vanity card, to talk to retention to see what offers they're floating. Sometimes that's enough to keep you onboard.
