My husband lost (as in confiscated) his brand new tube of toothpaste before a flight last week...but he was told he could have checked in his baggage that was not carry on.

That is what I want to avoid! I'm *not* checking bags so I'll be squeezing toothpaste into a little clear 3 oz plastic container. I'll buy some quart size baggies. I'm a good little soldier!
Oh Connie, btw...is your name here grest or...*Crest*?

Carol,
Just to be clear - each person is allowed only one quart sized baggie, with however many little jars and bottles under 3 oz. that will fit in that one bag..
Drug stores sell little plastic bottles that I"ve used to put small amounts of cream in when you don't want to take the whole thing -- one of those should work well for the t.p.

Thanks Irene! Another question...my sunscreen is a 3 oz tube with branded packaging. Can that be by itself in my carryon or does it have to go into the qt size ziplock? In other words do all creams, gels, pastes etc have to go into the baggie...even when they're commercially packaged?
Also, I like to take my own coffee and starter-packs I make of sugar and powered fat-free milk. The coffee will already be in store packaging and I assume ok (although it's more than 3 oz...I'm staying a week.) The sugar (Sucanat) and powdered milk will be in sandwich baggies. Should I put the filled sandwich baggies (with 3 oz each of sugar and powdered milk) into the larger qt size ziplock? They will fit as I'm not taking anything strange-looking but for that infamous toothpaste, and the sugar and powdered milk. Oh the challenges of modern-day travel!!!

All creams, lotions, liquids, aerosols and gels, including sunscreen, have to fit into that single ziplock bag.

No. Food isn't on the list of items that must go into the ziplock bag, unless it fits into one of the restricted categories (e.g., sauce, jelly, peanut butter, pressurized cheese, jello, pudding and yogurt).
Carol, I think you'll be much more comfortable with what you can and can't take, which items need special packaging and how you should package those items if you spend five minutes reviewing this TSA page regarding carry-on restrictions.

Dave thanks for that link. It still says nothing about powdered milk. It does cover breast milk thoroughly, and I'll bet it will be TSA's *male* inspectors who'll line up to inspect these kinds of containers:
(from TSA webpage):
"All items including formula or breast milk will be inspected."

Connie, if I can bring a smile to your face, it makes me smile too! Have a great weekend...and thanks for all your help, and thanks to the rest of you too. I'm packed and ready for my airport challenge. Happy Easter!

You should be fine with powdered milk because it doesn't fit into one of the prohibited or limited categories (such as gels and liquids.) Note that all of the food items that are restricted fit into one of those categories.
Another way to look at it is that there is no way the site could list all of the various foods that you are allowed to take with you in your carry-on. Thus, focus on the consistency (e.g., liquids or gels) of those that are restricted and you should be able to determine whether any specific item of food is allowed.

But Dave, it looks like something one could possibly snort. Well, the War on Drugs has been replaced by the War on Terrorism, so I guess I'll be ok with my powdered milk. Thanks again...over and out!

Just imagine that you're like Arlo Guthrie down on Whitehall Street, getting yourself injected, inspected, detected, infected, neglected and selected.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”
“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”
I just flew back home from Ft Lauderdale 2 weeks ago. They will let you carry it on, but it needs to be in a clear plastic baggie and out of your bag so they can inspect it.

My special toothpaste made it down there...but, a small bottle of extra virgin olive oil was "detected and selected" out of my carry-on coming back from Miami. Oh well...at least I got one good meal out of it.

I lost a small bottle of hand antiseptic gel because I forgot I had it in my handbag. Since it wasn't in with my quart sized bag with the other fluids and gels, they took it. Also, when this rule was new, I had a mascara in my carry on. It was found, but I was allowed to keep it - I was just told it needed to be in my quart bag from now on.
Since I've been traveling so much, I've got the routine figured out. I'm amazed each time, though that people are shocked that they can't bring their bottles of water with them. Even the displays in front of the security line don't seem to be enough for some people.

When I went to Cancun a few weeks ago my bottled water was confiscated in Miami (I forgot I had it, my bad). Then on the way back, I bought one (expensive!) *inside* the Cancun airport after passing security screening. I purchased the bottled water from an approved airport vendor right near my departure gate. One of my travel companions...another TS4Ms member who is well-traveled...insisted it would be fine to take the water on board. She was so very wrong. They announced (thankfully, in advance of departure) that no bottled water could be brought aboard...so I had a few minutes to swill it down.
Who knows...maybe the Mexican airport security authorities don't trust their own airport's vendors? Do they know something we oughta know but don't know?
