You can stop in Lexington, VA and visit my old alma mater Washington & Lee University. Robert E. Lee is buried in the Chapel. I believe they have refurbished the museum in the basement. Next door is VMI, which also has a museum. Stonewall Jackson is buried in Lexington. Further east is Charlottesville and the University of Virginia, and then Richmond.

Just be glad you no longer have to drive on US 60 through West Virginia, as I did in the '70s when traveling between my home in Missouri and W&L.

When you pass by Frankfort, KY you can stop by to see Rita & I, if we are in session. Rumor is that the Gov will call a special session in June, but no one knows quite what date.

We just did that trip this past week, well to/from Iowa catching 64 in Louisville I think it was. Anyway, on our return trip, we planned a day touring the Kentucky distilleries (Marker's Mark, Heaven Hill and Jim Beam) and really enjoyed it. They are a bit off the beaten path (about an hour or so from I64) but well worth it if you have the time.

                    Bluegrass Region
This beautiful region may be all about horses, with racetracks, 450 thoroughbred farms and a world-class park to prove it, but it also reeks of history and culture. Daniel Boone founded a settlement here; Bourbon was invented here, and Berea is at the center of a rich folk art tradition that dates back several centuries.

                    Major Roads: I-75 & I-64

                    Bluegrass, Blues & Barbecue
The musical styles of bluegrass and blues merge here, as the region was the birthplace of the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe (Rosine) and home for a while to the Father of the Blues, W.C. Handy (Henderson.) And should you wonder about the third part of the region's equation - barbecue - you need look no further than the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn, an Owensboro landmark.

                    Caves, Lakes, & Corvettes
This region sits atop a number of caves and caverns as well as the world's longest explored cave system at Mammoth Cave National Park. The Green and Nolin Rivers also reside here. Don’t forget to check out the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green and marvel at America's original sports car.

On the Virginia border, the Cumberland Gap remains as majestic as ever, as do the canyons of the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge's sandstone arches. Kentucky Appalachians
The Hatfields and McCoys may have once kept the area hopping during their legendary feud, but today all is quiet along the Appalachian front. This is the region where a brave pioneer woman, Jenny Wiley, gained icon status, and a pioneer of another kind, Loretta Lynn, started on her road to country music legend. A region whose beauty is as timeless as the mountains that define it.

                    New River Gorge National River.

Paddle or raft the Cheat River.

Since coal mining started its big decline in the 1980s, the state has been spared from heavy development and sprawl. And with 4,000-foot mountains, thundering rivers, 45 inches of precipitation per year, some of the best crags in the country, and miles and miles of rooty, rocky singletrack, it's beginning to enjoy a new cachet as a recreational oasis.
The 910,155-acre Monongahela National Forest ("the Mon" to locals), which includes the Otter Creek, Dolly Sods, Cranberry, and Laurel Fork wilderness areas and takes up practically the entire eastern third of the state? Perhaps West Virginia has been misunderstood because of its rustic personality.

Discover the bountiful New River/Greenbrier Valley Region.
The rich natural resources of the New River/Greenbrier Valley have beckoned and rewarded explorers as far back as human memory reaches. Today these same rivers, forests, springs and mountains offer new treasures to a new generation of explorers. Each year, the region's rivers float whitewater rafters, while rock climbers scale the walls of the ancient New River Gorge. Throughout the New River/Greenbrier Valley, miles and miles of trails lead hikers, bikers and horseback riders beside sparkling streams, past history-rich abandoned mining towns, out to spectacular scenic overlooks and into charming villages. Anglers and hunters find plentiful fish and game in wildlife management areas and state forests. And some of West Virginia's most beautiful state and national parklands are here. Enrich your senses at Tamarack, an extraordinary arts center near Beckley. Dig into coal mining history in towns throughout the region. Discover art, antiques and adventurous cuisine in Lewisburg. Succumb to the pampering at The Greenbrier, West Virginia's world-renowned spa.
