  • Marriott quality?

Should I be worried about an upcoming stay at a Residence Inn? This from their website:

Marriott Senior Discount, Studio room, 1 queen, sofabed, bath, licing room, kitchen, breakfast daily, must be 62 years or older

Actually I would worry about the Residence Inn quality. We stayed at the RI in La Jolla California recently...it was dirty, dingy, run down, and not very nice at all. We left a day early so we would not have to spend another night there although we had it reseved and paid for.

Ouch! We've stayed at Residence Inns in the past and have never had any problems. In fact, we've stayed at this particular one (in Falls Church, VA) before and it currently has some very good reviews on tripadvisor. I did read about another "bad" one in Anaheim, near Disneyland though. I just thought this unit description was hysterical.

For business, I stay at Marriott properties all the time - Residence Inn, Springhill Suites, Courtyards - pretty much all of them. I must say that I have NEVER been disappointed. In fact, I stay at them because I know EXACTLY what I can expect depending on which one it is - room layout, bedding, desk type, Internet access, kitchenette or not, breakfast facilities (free or not). When you travel as much as I do (about 100 hotel nights last year, not including vacations), then it's very comforting to know what you can expect when you get to the end of the day.

Btw, I find that I have exactly the same experience with the Hilton brands as well.

I'm still trying to figure out if I've ever stayed in a "licing room" though. I think not as I'm sure I'd remember!

We use Marriott (primarily Residence Inns) and Hilton most of the time as well. In fact I had a reservation at a Hampton Inn in Alexandria, but ended up cancelling as I got a better rate using a code through work for the Residence Inn.

Good one, Luanne. And so relevant with the recent news.

I've been staying at Marriott properties for about 12 years and only two RI's ever impressed me. One is the relatively new one in Manhattan and the other is the one in downtown Ottawa, Canada. I've been in plenty I'd never return to, whether because of property condition or surly staff. I've found HIX and Hampton's to be much more consistent in that category, along with Marriott's SpringHill Suites.

Call the property and ask them if they've completed the conversion to Marriott's "new bedding". If not, be prepared to sleep on bricks... I've had better beds at a campground. Well, you wanted an honest opinion

Where did I say I wanted an honest opinion? I'm fine with this Marriott, as mentioned I've stayed here before. And for the difference in price between the Residence Inn and the Hampton Inn I can "suffer" for a couple of nights. We've used Residence Inns a lot in the past when traveling with the whole family as we like the 2-bedroom set up.

                    Ah, post-a-joke; got it......

Also, I've found RI's to be quite variable in floorplans; some really nice and some barely fit the description of what they're selling. Most I've been in are older properties, so that may be coloring my opinion.

I was able to snag the Manhattan property for 147/nt over Christmas, so I'll offer up a third opinion on that one. Our last two stays there have been excellent.
