AA Flier miles will now expire in 18 months

There going from 36 months to 18 months and it is effective this year. So if you had not traveled or had acctivity in your AA FF account in the last 18 months come Dec you lose your miles.

New 18-Month AAdvantage® Mileage Retention Policy



Dear Frank S

Because we value your participation in the AAdvantage program, we want to let you know about an upcoming program change. AAdvantage members now must have mileage earning or redemption activity once every 18 months in order to remain active and retain their miles. Effective December 15, 2007, mileage balances will expire from AAdvantage accounts that have not had miles either earned or redeemed within the previous eighteen (18) month period. This change will not impact you as long as you remain active in the AAdvantage program.

You can verify your last activity date by logging in to AA.com with your AAdvantage number and password. Click on "View All" in the "View My Miles" section. Just above the Mileage Summary, your last activity date is noted.

The chart below outlines how the last activity date determines the mileage expiration date:

June 16, 2006 and Beyond Expiring 18 Months Later*

Keep in mind, the first time miles will expire under this new policy is December 15, 2007.

It's easy to continue to keep your account active and retain your miles indefinitely! Just earn or redeem miles at least once every 18 months. Keep doing the things you are doing. And here are even more ways to earn and redeem miles:

From what I recall , There was 2 different ones. I forget the website that offered it to you and it is not listed on the aa site.

Yep thats the one but now you have to qualify to take there survey.

Because of this I looked into our accounts. Both me and my wife had just flew with AA a few months back so I did not have to worry about us losing our miles for another year. My sons would have expired in DEC. So I placed an order with there shopping merchants with both AA and us air. Us air is also doing the same thing as far as the 18 month expiration.

AA miles

My miles were going to expire in May. I simply added the membership AA reward # to my car rental online. There maybe a small fee when you rent the car,save the rental receipt to make sure you get the credit.

Also belong to AA dining and made sure we ate at a restaurant that is part of the club and that added to our miles. This added a minimal amount of points but extended our miles out 3 years. I finally had enough to use a FF ticket so I didn't want to lose them.

You can also buy 1000 AA points for under $30.00 and then there is another fee but the dining out option or car rental is cheaper and serves the same purpose.

Just make sure with the dining out club that you charge the meal with the credit card attached to the account. In my case I have AA dining and Delta dining which currently are under the same company unlike the past and you must have a seperate card for each membership.

If BIS (butt in seat on an airplane) was the only criteria, I'm sure a lot of people, myself included, would have orphan miles expire. However, with all the parter possibilities, many for little to no cost, there's really no reason airline miles should ever expire, given the current rules structures...

I don't fly AA very often, so I don't read the AA forum on Flyertalk, etc.

But I do have about 15k miles with them for various trips that I'd like to keep alive.

Air Canada is more draconian at 12 months expiration with no activity and you must use your miles within 7 years.
